  • Hard News: Don't Panic,

    But plod are carrying SMG's

Most armed UK police have used the HK47 rifle as their weapon of choice for years. It's much more accurate than a handgun and so regarded as safer. I'm not sure if the police ones have full-auto, but even if they do I don't think they would use it.

Haven't seen snipers though - maybe they could help the cleaners by shooting the pigeons.

Regarding the radicalisation of terrerists at university, perhaps the reason why the IRA were fairly effective was that they mostly *didn't* go to university.

So why choose Tiger Tiger - it's a cattle market focused on B&T girls and guys on their big trip up to town.

  • Hard News: Don't Panic,

Good article in the Register about this.

Your chances of being killed by a bomb, or any other sort of public disaster, are minimal, so it's irrational to worry about them.

As pointed out in the article, the IRA were actually competent terrorists - but Britain never bombed Baghdad or locked people up for thoughtcrime. These "bombs" are just mad people trying to murder - they have more in common with Aramoana than real terrorism.

  • Hard News: Not off to bed,

Well, I'm sure this sounds super-freaky, but I want to be fair to the guy too. I cannot even imagine what it's like for any parent to buy a child who committed suicide, and I don't blame the man for making teen self-harm a hobby horse he's ridden very hard.

I think it disqualifies him from having the kind of dispassionate open mind on these matters that we're entitled to expect from a minister. If someone's kid had been killed in a police chase then I think that would disqualify them from being Police Minister on the same grounds.

If Jim *has* to be a minister to secure his vote, don't the Fishing and Antarctica portfolios deserve his attention.

Possible options for the commanders include retaliation in kind, coming under the command of the US, if it exists, and "go to Australia". New Zealand appears to be missing out badly on the post-apocalyptic tourism market

Even if they've disposed of their missiles by firing them at Moscow, the Trident subs are nuclear powered and would not be welcome in NZ waters.

  • Hard News: Unflattering stereotypes…,

I pay/d my licence fee and I have to pay again?

Some justification for that whinge? The BBC should really provide access to everyone with their TV license.

However that's a slippery slope for them. If they access control BBC content on the Internet, then the next step would be to do the same on broadcast media (Freeview, Sky, Cable). Having done that, it becomes a lot more glaring that the license fee is to extract money from those who *don't* want the service - and bring in pressure to make it a conventional subscription.
