Mmm, hot and buttery crumpet. Both kinds.

As for nomenclature, as well as the "hotties" and "babes" solution, I go for "lust objects" myself. And yes, I say it in RL. Whether that would work for a particular character's voice is another matter.

For poly people, when talking about those you have shagged, "sweeties" seems to be common. I find it a bit twee myself (and not that great for prospective lovers), but since my last partner called me that, I'm somewhat more reconciled to it. My favourite poly term is "metamour" - a lover's lover.

@Lucy - Aral is definitely bi, and Lois actually did cop a bit from a few bi people with that line from Cordelia saying he was bi, and is now monogamous. However, it was understood what she was getting at; just some clumsy phrasing.

Also, I'll vote for Byerly being the coolest potentially bi man. And Lois also wins for having a hermaphrodite significant character.

  • Hard News: After the Deluge,

Getting back to gagging in the UK, it is chronic. The difference is, of course, with real "celebs", the paps catch up with them sooner or later. Name suppression works - kinda - in NZ because the culture of bottom-feeling media following around people on the off-chance hasn't really developed much yet.

The other thing in the UK is their utterly ridiculous and antiquated defamation laws, where while the truth is a defence, you must prove the statement is true, rather than the offended party needing to prove it was false.

    No "Best Pop Album"?

    That is soooo bizarre.

Also, even though I loathe the genres, no "Country/Folk" category? They've got "Christian/Gospel", after all.

Yes, I'm sure the Necromonicon is encoded in that thread. Don't read the first sentence of each comment in reverse at midnight!

  • Discussion: Closer to Home?,

@Jack - interestingly enough, I was determined to have the reverse experience in London. I spent over 2 years hanging out with no-one other than Poms.

Interestingly, I had horrible culture shock and was quite miserable until I started hanging out with a few other antipodeans who "spoke my language". Balance is certainly the thing - I was still mostly surrounded by Brits, but those few Aussies, Saffas and Kiwis made the last couple of years I was there much more bearable.

One more thing (I should think about editing before I start reading the rest of the site). Plenty of the scientific method was invented by such dodgy types as alchemists and homeopaths (the quaint notion of trying a remedy on someone suffering from a syndrome, waiting to see if it improved and then prescribing the "proven" remedy to others with the same syndrome? Homeopaths). Implying that science has essentially been a seamless development via logic and immediate proof is completely disingenuous. Hell, the Big Bang theory wasn't proven till the 1960s.

This is not to say that we should not make efforts to try and determine the mechanisms for why alternative medicine may work - I wish more money were pumped into figuring out why so many people report it does.

    Also:

If woowoo helps then woowoo is good, that is my stance.

Totally seconded. I don't care if homeopathy is a placebo effect (although curing my 6-week-old nephew of jaundice within a day doesn't seem like placebo, although I suppose it could be a coincidence), but if no-one's being deceived about it being the One Cure for terminal cancer or whatever, fuckit, who cares what the mechanism is, if you feel better.

@richard - funnily enough, the stat I've heard about conventional medical treatment is "1/3 cured, 1/3 stay the same, 1/3 worse". Now, since I was told that while training as a classical homeopath, I have no idea whether it's true. I wonder if the medical profession do. (I have oodles of respect for conventional medicine for life-saving surgery, and some kinds of treatment, but I think it's crap at chronic low-level stuff)

What would be interesting if some kind of difficult-to-treat problem like migraines were treated by various different methodologies: conventional medicine, homeopathy, naturopathy, acupuncture, etc. With a large enough group of people and a decent amount of time (say, at least 6 months), the results would be interesting. Of course, given the expense, only pharmaceutical companies would be able to fund such research, and of course they wouldn't. It's a shame.

And why didn't I look into Outrageous Fortune earlier? Obviously I've been away from home far too long. Am, erm, obtaining it now to check it out properly.

  • Up Front: Outraged of Sockburn,

Eh, I thought the sex scenes in The L Word were pretty good, actually. Sure, manicured and glossy, but no more so than the rest of the show. Seemed pretty realistic to me, in an LA-showbiz power-dyke kind of way.

Now, talking about realistic lesbo scenes, Bound still wins for me. At least once I get past Jennifer Tilly's speaking voice, and I crank up the WSOD about Gina Gershon being a butch dyke (she does a not-too-bad job, considering).
