  • Up Front: Hellfire's a Promise Away,

I think it makes a kind of sense to date a few dickheads during the undergraduate years. By the time you are actually ready to settle down there's a chance that experience has taught you a few bitter lessons and the sweet, dependable, non-dangerous guys will seem more like a refreshing change.

    Oh sweet :) Happy universary!

I'm still dreading the day when my kids ask what that anniversary we celebrate in May is actually the anniversary of...

My seven-year-old has it all planned out. He's going to find a "lonely girl" to marry and in between having many, many babies they will run a computer shop together.

  • Hard News: Just Friday,

They are also describing a possible link between paracetamol use in children and later asthma.

And yet most doctors pretty near force the stuff on you no matter what you take your kid in for.

Well, obviously, I think that as long as every partner in the arrangement can give informed consent, NZers SHOULD be allowed to enter into polygamous and polyandrous marriages. But I'm also aware that makes me a fairly extreme minority, and it ain't going to happen.

I struggle to come up with a moral objection to polygamy/amory that would hold up in a context where all partners are equal and consenting though I can see that the overhauling of divorce, custody and inheritance laws that legalised polygamy would require might be a teensy bit of a PITA.

Mind you my views on marriage in general are a tad bit non-mainstream.

That whole vanilla privilege thing is giving me a lot to think about because there are a bunch of sexual and lifestyle (for want of a better term) practices that I am profoundly uncomfortable with for reasons that feel very valid but may also be built on just not getting it.

I understand about bedroom role-play and exploring the line between pleasure and pain but when it gets to getting off on really hurting someone or where whole relationships are unequal or based on a concept of control or ownership I just can't feel good about that.

There's a lot that the sex party is promoting that I could get right behind but I'm trying to picture the conversation I'd have telling my mum I was voting for them. Or worse her telling me she was voting sex.

  • Up Front: Walking Through the Ruins,

What I don't recommend is moving house at 36 weeks pregnant (especially when the previous baby was born at 37 weeks and you are having visions of squatting amongst the packing cases). I had Very Firm Ideas about where everything needed to go and very little ability to do stuff like lifting or bending so I spent about a week in various states of impotent rage while people put things in the wrong places. Then the first day in the new house the log burner and toilet both broke.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

Voted at the church around the corner with almost no one else there. The almost-seven-year-old came into the booth with me and the three-year-old with my partner.

Dinner was red wine and vege lasagne seasoned with a little despair. Don't think my mother is having her best ever birthday from the look on her face.

My electorate (chch central) has been close enough to feel that my vote was actually worth something.

A bisexual friend once explained to me that he was simply attracted to certain people, rather than men or women - and that makes sense to me.

I often wonder how many of us this would be true for if there was no social stigma about any sexual orientation or pressure to label oneself and then stay in that little box.

Giovanni - that MLK quote just took me from lady-like sniffle to full blubber.
