  • Up Front: Reviewing the Election, in reply to Nigel McNie,

we are beginning to head towards a time where hacking our elections become merely a question of cost/benefit. I'm glad to hear online voting isn't a priority for the 2017 general election at least.

Same here. I think the hacking issues could be dealt with to some degree of acceptence, but I really struggle to see how the major social issues (notably a guarantee of secrecy, a freedom from coercion, and an ability for the vast majority of voters to clearly understand and trust how everyone's votes come to be reliably counted) could ever be resolved when e-voting is even merely provided as an option. I've yet to see promoters of internet voting actually address these, or even acknowledge them as potential issues, so am glad that it's not seriously on the radar yet at least.

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live, in reply to nzlemming,

I clicked through to the ratings on Throng from a couple of nights ago.

Both 3 News and Campbell Live seem to rate well for TV3 on the +1 channel, whereas OneNews doesn't rate a mention (despite higher popularity overall and lower popular competition from other programmes), which seems a little weird to me.

Is there some known reason for this? Are people switching from 1 to 3+1 after OneNews? Are people who get home later preferring 3 for some reason? Or am I misinterpreting the ratings?

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live, in reply to Sacha,

Broadcasting is a limited, regulated industry. Licences can include whatever conditions governments decide to negotiate in the public interest.

Hi Sacha. Does this carry in any way to internet streaming, given that things tend to be moving that way? If not then more general media regulation would probably be more relevant over time, at which point I suppose you run into the problems of trying to define what counts as 'media'.

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live, in reply to Bart Janssen,

If that is true then it is also equally true for 7 Sharp, and the various radio shows hosted by Hosking and Henry and their ilk.

IMHO the 6pm news is also largely entertainment, going by how it's structured and advertised, on both major channels. I guess there have always been elements of entertainment, but lately I think it's become much more than a decade or two ago.

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live, in reply to Bart Janssen,

John Key tells Newstalk ZB that Campbell Live plays no role in holding the government to account, and is purely for entertainment.

    ….

Say something that is patently false, an absolute baldfaced lie, then repeat enough times that the media take it up and present it as fact.

Does Campbell Live really hold the government to account, though? Doesn’t doing so require obtaining explanations from authorities?

This doesn’t happen anywhere near as much with Campbell Live as it should, because the Prime Minister and his Ministers so frequently don’t make themselves available to give explanations of things. Unless it’s about rugby or cute and cuddly cats.

Not that this is John Campbell’s or his colleagues' fault, and not to suggest that it makes the PM’s recent (alleged) statement any less ridiculous in the scheme of things. We do seem to have a government in place which has a political strategy of controlling the avenues by and issues upon which it’s able to be held to account (if at all), and it’s now been re-elected twice.

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live, in reply to Rich of Observationz,

If you analyse TV news down, it consists of an A4 page of information spun out to an hour. Lose the noise, and we’d have a 3 minute news bulletin.

That'd be awesome in my world. Not that I'm disinterested in news or think it's not important, but the constant filler that's inserted for the pure reason of stretching it to its exact scheduled hour each evening is sometimes just inane.

Why is it so hard to have a news bulletin that's as short or as long as it takes to describe the actual news, then slide more detailed analysis of the issues around that?

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live, in reply to Damian Christie,

I can only look at last week’s ratings, but even last week on average it lost around 20% of its viewers from 3 News. Yes that’s better than Seven Sharp as a percentage, but it should be noted that 3 News is doing really, really badly in the ratings at the moment.

What are the criteria for the ratings system to determine that a show's been watched by someone? Would people who watched for the first 10 minutes, then switched off, be attributed as watching the entire hour? Or is it possible to track people watching the entire thing.

I can only speak introspectively (so not worth much), but whichever channel's news I'm watching will usually only survive the first 15 minutes. It's usually old news by 6pm, contrary to all the commercial promises about "revealing" everything at 6pm as if the internet doesn't exist. There's not much incentive to hang around through sport and weather chit-chat, plus whatever other padding might be needed to make up an hour on a given day, to wait for something like CL to begin, so a failing lead-in doesn't seem unlikely.

  • Speaker: We don’t make the rules, we're…, in reply to Bart Janssen,

I'll take that as a Yes. Fair enough and I withdraw what might have appeared to be judgement of anyone.

I think I'm just thrown by how massive the marketing is, including how it's managed to infiltrate MSM to the extent that it's an event to find out something which could be easily looked up anyway. Okay then. :)

“Sky viewers rage as Game of Thrones’ NZ simulcast fails”

Okay, I know I'm not totally with it and that Sky shouldn't be excused for messing up something which it's blatantly used to pull in lots of subscribers, but...

Sky viewers who stayed home today to watch the first episode of Game of Thrones' fifth season at the promised time of 1pm say

Do so many people really take GoT so seriously that they take time off work to watch it immediately on release? So much of the publicity and media coverage around the show seems to be as if there aren't a bunch of books already out there which more or less explain what's going to happen anyway.
