  • Up Front: Towards a Sex-Positive Utopia,

It strikes me that the best move towards a sex-positive utopia would be a thorough, honest, and explicit sex-ed book for children, but it would therefore probably be R18.

Have to be a website then, I guess.

  • Up Front: Towards a Sex-Positive Utopia,

    The Beatles in Wellington (50s?)

    22nd & 23rd June, 1964. :)

  • Hard News: The war over a mystery,

Keith Hunter spoke about the book for half an hour on Sunday Morning.

Interesting, but I wasn't entirely convinced by some of his conclusions.

  • Southerly: Coming Up For Air,

I do feel bad about how the rest of the country has so let down Christchurch's residents. You shouldn't have to fight this on your own.

    +1

  • Southerly: Coming Up For Air, in reply to Joe Wylie,

Auckland doesn't exhibit a lot of apparent community organisation either

Now that you mention it, that's quite true. I didn't mean denigrate Chchch's level of community organisation, just to make the observation of what was "apparent", "from an Auckland perspective", under circumstances where one might expect a much higher profile.

I guess that's somewhat to do with the largely Auckand-centric nature of the news media, but it's still surprising - to me, at least.

  • Southerly: Coming Up For Air,

Not coordinated, not widespread, not fast. I encourage everyone in Christchurch to demand some accountability from the political opposition that we all pay for. Make clear to them the consequences of continuing to not do their jobs. You deserve better, but it's not going to come without a fight.

Indeed. From an Auckland perspective, the apparent community organisation in Chchch is currently nil.

  • Hard News: Getting Out,

The Specials were great but the sound was not – bit of a hard shell and the stage had to be off-centre due to the posts which meant fewer people could be close to the stage, and what was the debacle regarding the bar all about?! – 40 minute queues and then they ran out of beer, not to mention the bar shutting down at 10pm which encouraged a pre-gig swill rather than a civilised drink.

Oh, I don't know; sounds about normal for Auckland large venues. ;)

    What's the diff?

We don't send people to prison so that they can be punished there. The denial of liberty *is* the punishment.

  • Hard News: The Very Worst,

Untreated dental problems expose the people who suffer them to any number of other, potentially severe, health problems. For which we as taxpayers eventually pay a lot more money than we would have spent in the first place just fixing prisoners' teeth.

Mind you, couldn't you probably say much the same for the general populace?

  • Field Theory: Going Legit,

"You can't have a name like 'Cunty McTaintStain' and expect people to take you seriously". This is not the point in the evolution of roller derby where everyone understands that it takes skill and fitness to be a player; that happened after the first few bouts. This is where roller derby goes legit.

or "sells out". Depends how you look at it I guess. I'm kind of surprised by this development. The girls I knew of who... er, derbied(?) didn't strike me as the type who gave much of a fuck whether anyone considered them "legitimate" or not. In fact, RD seemed to me a haven for the kind of rebel chicks who found mainstream sports too square. So, - like I say - surprised.

Anyhow, good luck to 'em. :)
