  • Hard News: No Surprises,

Yeah, I like to think we'll have 'Bad Moon Rising' echoing around our rest homes.

  • Hard News: No Surprises,

P'raps we could just agree to disagree on the need for separate Maori seats, Craig? My view is that the time to scrap the Maori electoral seats is when Maori say so (and yes, I do see the innate impossibility of assuming that there can be one voice for Maoridom). And now I'm way out of my depth so I'll shut up.

  • Hard News: No Surprises,

Fair question and I'm almost certainly the wrong person to give you a good answer.
What Sacha said, and for me the key idea is recognising that Maori have special status because this is their homeland - they are not just another ethnic group, as Rodney Hide seems to be suggesting with his comment about muliculturalism.
If Maoridom say they want dedicated Maori seats, that's good enough for me.

  • Hard News: No Surprises,

This is all getting away from the point a bit. Leaving aside cynicism about Rodney arguing for more diverse representation (which is hard to disagree with, per se), the more important point to me was that he seemed to be using 'multiculturalism' as a convenient excuse for ignoring biculturalism.

Craig, if Rodney was genuinely concerned about improving representation by non-old white welathy males, then perhaps he could start with his own party.

She was, eh? I was amazed how easily she got the better of Casey Williams. The feeders had no trouble at all in getting the ball to her, right under the post.

  • Hard News: No Surprises,

Hide seems to see Maori as being just another minority group like, say, Italians or Chinese. From today's DomPost:

He [Hide] was concerned local government was dominated by 'old white males' and it should be more representative of all groups, not just Maori.

Biculturalism seems to have passed him by. And he is kind of like the anti-Key in that he has no hesitation in appealing to people's baser instincts.

Key's appeal is to our better natures

    You're right, SimonG.
It'll be interesting to see how Key stands up to Family First & co post-referendum. That Larry Baldock is a nasty little man .. banging on about democracy whilst ignoring the fact that, er, he got voted out of Parliament.

Call me naive, but I was surprised.
Rodney resigning if Maori seats were included? Win-win!
