I largely buy the listener because I can't be arsed figuring out which day the paper publishes TV listing

The downturn of The Listener had an upside for me - when I stopped buying it, I also stopped watching TV, because I never knew when anything was on. Brilliant!

    <embarassed>Um, I don't get it.

Don't worry, it just means you're immune to The Listener

  • Legal Beagle: The Inexorable Advance,

But I think there's a case for seeing it my way, as the guy who's paying for it.

This would have more force if we (taxpayers) were paying for all of it, which isn't a bad idea really. Interesting thought - what if Student Associations were more like school Boards of Trustees (with the proviso that students can represent themselves, rather than delegate to their parents :-))? ie. if they were considered a fundamental and essential part of the organisation, rather than some kind of lobby group.

  • Legal Beagle: The Inexorable Advance,

As for student loans, they could be less extortionate by not existing at all

Surely your issue is not with student loans, but student fees? I for was quite grateful for the former, considering the magnitude of the latter.

I also like the idea of ordinary citizens being able to reward good drivers with 'mod points", and when you get enough mod points you get a prize or something.

Surely the point of mod points is to be able to mod other drivers down, eg. I drive well, you piss me off, you lose your licence / get a '-1 Troll' note on your file.

The world needs more philosophical tech writers.

I know one who has a PhD in the Philosophy of Theology. So there are some around (well, at least two).

But I took Physics and Music, and Physics sooo won. Protip: The only student worse than an Engineering student is a Performance Voice student.

And I imagine a lot of pot gets smoked on those several-month-long research voyages

This might go some way towards explaining SpongeBob Squarepants, produced by marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg. Whenever one of my children comes out with some particularly sophisticated knowledge/surreal humour, and I ask them "Where did you hear about that?", the answer is invariably SpongeBob.

  • Hard News: Greetings from the Garden City,

When Amy Sedaris turned up as the Tooth Fairy in one episode I thought I might levitate

That's excellent, I must watch more closely next time my kids have it on. OTOH, to much famiglia Sedaris might be bad for their mental health...
