  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

The reader might not be doing suff that everybody respects but she still deserves to be treated with respect.

She's screaming for us to look at her breasts. Are we (men, women and children) not allowed to say what we think of said breasts? How would that be respectful and not, say, patronising or prudish?

giovanni, that sounds like you're implying that women get screwed, and men screw. That women are passive sexually. That's not really an idea I can get on board with. In a lesbian relationship, who's doing the screwing.

We can try to subvert it, I'm all for it, but even in homosexual relationships the active participant is sometimes referred to as the male (witness that wonderful exchange in The Torch Song Trilogy - "What do you do?" (by which he meant what's you job or occupation) "I'm the Woman").

To add to the Dale Spender argument, there are those who believe that homophobia (applied to gay males) is really an extension of mysoginy and that they are both a form of loathing of the passive sexual position. And again I am referring to the crude, traditional way of conceiving the heterosexual male as being the active participant and reducing sex as penetration by the penis. The person I heard make the argument (Piergiorgio Paterlini) pointed out that in spite of centuries of homophobia "fucking somebody in the ass" still means something positive, ie getting your own way.

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

men, women, owner, contributor, consumer, etc

That's still mighty vague. Specifically, in this case, what's the interplay of those positions?

Whereas cock, dickhead, bollocks, balls, etc are all compliments, right? Would it not be possible to consider, just for a minute, that it's the sexual element that makes 'cunt' a put-down, not the gender one?

Agreed, although being a dick is not quite as bad as being a cunt, is it? And screwing somebody means getting your way, whereas getting screwed quite the opposite.

However, there are always broader power relationships involved despite intent or outcome

    Specifically?

  • Hard News: Radio Times,

since then I have harboured an irrational dislike of Maurice Williamson.

As opposed to most everybody else, who harbours an entirely rational dislike of Maurice Williamson.

  • Readers' Tips,

That was pretty lame, I know, but what can I say... I'm genuinely passionate about saving money. Call me an agent of change, even if it's just one or two bucks.

  • Readers' Tips,

For those who bake a lot of bread/pizza and live in Wellington: fresh yeast is best bought in the wholesale section of Moore Wilson's, where it costs less than 3 dollars per kilogram.

  • Hard News: User-generated Speechification,

"when we talk about paid content we are referring to, for example, professionally produced tv shows, industry developed games, employed journalists' news articles, recorded news bulletins etc; and user generated content e.g. home-made movies, freeware games, blogs, citizen reporting etc."

At which point, if ever, does public address cease to be a "blog" and become paid content, then? Presumably it generates a revenue, which will be shared among the staff (a-ha!).

Are the bloggers Russell's employees? Is PA set up as a co-op? I don't know and, quite frankly, I couldn't care less. If I look at my bookmarks, some items fall squarely into the paid content category, others in the user-generated content, and others still - perhaps the majority - would be harder to place in one box or the other. But the point is that it's not how I organise my bookmarks, which means that the king-foot soldier distinction for me has no practical meaning, which goes back to the point that most have made thus far.

If we chose for the sake of argument to regard PA as paid content, and the forum as user-generated content, then I'd have to say that sure, perhaps there is a hierarchy of sorts in that most discussions are originated by blog posts, but it is also true that oftentimes the forum is responsible for the most interesting and insightful pages generated by this site. Which is no slight to the blog posters, of course, after all they generally participate in the discussions themselves.

  • Hard News: Better, faster ... prettier,

Much as this household has had frequent cause to complain about the ideological drift of the publication, its morbid interest in our personal health (do they know something we don't?) and Joanne Black's rallying cries for the disenfranchised elites, ultimately we still need to know what's happening, and what's on the telly. If the Dom Post were half decent maybe we would start buying that and cancel our Listener subscription, but I can't see that happening any time soon.

That's not just a Kiwi thing. Don't forget Rudolph Giuliani, the most mispelled name in politics. I quickly lost count of the number of sub-editors that ought to have lost their jobs over that one over the course of his nominating campaign.

(Wouldn't it be grand if he ran for mayor of Feilding?)
