  • Cracker: Johnny Foreigner & the Auckland…,

My understanding was that, since around 2009 there had been a divergence between the value of New Zealand housing stock and New Zealand housing debt (which is to say the increase in the price of housing cannot be explained by New Zealand residents borrowing, so money appears to be entering the system from somewhere else). This divergence seems to be on the increase recently (suggesting even more money entering the housing system from elsewhere).

I reckon that could make "folklore" grade.

I will note that one way some people in the U.S. are trying to defend against porn copyright trolls is with the claim porn in the U.S. is not copyrightable. Some claim this is not an entirely settled point.

I am actually working in Christchurch this week, and it was a wonderfully photogenic morning with a hint of fog around Hagley Park.

Just noting that now that people have realised "hey we can manipulate depth of field with computers" we are seeing a range of different applications, including this "lens"

  • Notes & Queries: The Rejected Selfie,

I've got to take issue with "It seems impossible for us to conceive the fact that for most of human history, the vast majority of people had no idea what they looked like."
Mirrors have been around for more than human history, if possibly a prestige item for much of that. For that matter the legend of Narcissus suggests people knew what there reflection looked like.
My selfie story: A couple of months ago, I had just gotten back from traveling for a few days when I was ask for an urgent headshot for a program for an event I was involved with this week. Since I looked unshaven in the headshot, I thought I'd make it look deliberate and took the opportunity to start a beard over the intervening period.

  • Hard News: A GCSB Roundup, in reply to Lucy Telfar Barnard,

Would it even be possible to spy effectively these days without in some way filtering all electronic communication?

I am going to say yes it would, as there are both a) Methods of passing messages that avoid the electronic filters (most of these are only really of use if you were actually engaging in a conspiracy as they are impractically difficult for day to day privacy) b) a track record that it is people on the ground noticing stuff (in the community) that have actually identified real plots.
It might be worth noting that the U.S. also gathers all the metadata (who is sending to who) of things sent through the postal system by photographing all the mail. So it is broader issues than just electronic communication.

Long term solution regular stretching and twisting exercises for the back that create more space and strengthen the muscles that support the spine.

I am gradually moving to working at the computer standing. I am lucky enough to have two monitors, and a bookcase next to my desk at just the right height for standing working. Depending on the application I am using I alternate between standing and sitting as comfortable.
