  • Up Front: What Sixteen Is,

That if i ran, I would be kinda irresistible, like a bunny target.

I had to do that once, aged about 18, with a large, unrestrained, unaccompanied and aggressive dog. Aggressive in all mouth no trousers sort of way, not a get off my patch NOW sort of way, I later realised. But still scary.

It's catch 22. If they don't like your opinions, you should keep them to yourself because of the time-honoured tradition of a politically neutral public service. If they do like your opinions, keeping them to yourself is an unforgiveable act of cowardice in the face of overwhelming pressure to conform, which is a gross breach of the time-honoured tradition of a politically neutral public service.

  • Hard News: Crash and Contempt,

I'm pretty sure Obama said, WRT Palin, something along the lines of "it's family business, not politics, and I'd be the last one to judge, given my mother's life experiences".

  • Hard News: Need to Know,

I think I read recently that the week of 23-25 September would be the last sitting of Parliament before the election.

  • Hard News: Conscious Party,

Is it just me who cannot think of an Op Shop song? You mention something called "One Day", but nothing comes to mind. Am I out of sync with what the hip kids are listening to?

Everyone who's seen one of those NZ Post ads with the guy finding the girl's wallet, or the young man with the new baby and the estranged father, will have heard the song - it starts "absence makes the heart grow fonder..."

It's not hip kids music, it's very very mainstream.

  • Cracker: Being there is everything.…,

    Ow.

My bags wandered off once between Wellington and Queenstown, probably during the connection at Christchurch. The whole sticker thing looked a bit wonky, which is where I think it all went wrong.

Thing is, it was Christmas Eve on the second to last flight of the day into Queenstown, and the missing bag had all my Christmas pressies in it, not to mention the usual clean smallclothes. It was couriered to me by 8 or 9 that evening, and I barely had to rouse myself from the Coronas on the sundeck to retrieve it. I was very happy (after a brief worry) and didn't receive any re-education.

I think the thing with that is that running a complex process involves assuming people and things behaving in predictable ways, and when the process has a rare failure, some people's first instinct is to blame the uncontrollable factors, ie the customer, rather than the assumptions being flawed. It's a bit like economics in that sense.

A friend of mine told me she sent her wisdom teeth to her parents, with a note that read "IVE GOT YOUR DORTER."

  • Hard News: Go Us,

Perhaps we could locate some sources before we apply such broad brush criticism to an entire political movement. I've certainly not seen any actual pro-choice advocates say such things.

I do, however, suspect that Palin may have been criticised for having a really busy and important job as well as a special needs kid, in the sense that perhaps she might be better not to do that job and look after the kid instead. Not the same thing.

Amnio (and I think there's another test) have high false positive rates and some risk of causing miscarriage. If I were staunchly pro-life, I wouldn't bother with the test.

  • Stories: The Internet,

Got my PC with modem on my student loan in 98 (back when you paid interest on it, but before they stopped you taking lump sums). The first few months were pretty dull, with a bit of faffing round on email and the alt newsgroups, although I was taken aback by the binaries people would post from time to time on newusers. I didn't know any actual sites that could hold my attention.

But then, my favourite New Zealand director started making films of my favourite books, and I wanted to know more. The TV and print news was utterly useless on the subject, but I figured the internet was the place to find fellow geeks. The various LOTR fansites introduced me to what the internet was actually capable of (better, faster and more accurate content tailored to niche audiences), and from there a whole world opened.
