  • Hard News: Holiday Musings,

You can actually do non-porno sexuality in science fiction without drowning it in cheese sauce.

If you're not careful, I will criticize that movie. For a non-porno, I felt like I had cheese sauce on my face when I walked out.

Do I get a tally-whack for that? Only 3872 to claw back from Ranapia.

  • Hard News: Holiday Musings,

Well seriously BenWilson, I dont think it *is* unhealthy!
It's just not I want to do with my strictly-limited time of being alive

Actually, most of your reasons are the same as my reasons for not playing games so much any more.

"Probably the film industry has been guilty" has to be the most disingenous line in the history of film commentary! :-)

Yes, he's entering George Soros levels there. Although, TBH, I think film audiences are the truly guilty party. A film isn't a blockbuster until it's busted the box office.

I like fucking -- a lot. Reading prose sex scenes that are a danger to the lactose-intolerant and should be avoided by Jews, Muslims and vegans due to the lashings of ham? Not so much.

Stick to R rated then man.

O just waiting for the moment!

I'm a blunt instrument guy myself. I like to kid myself that death is not a necessary outcome from violence.

Mortensen to deliver the awful "us people of the West" speech

There was me hating it because it wasn't in the book. I even remember the line "Men of the West", thinking "Eh? What about the hobbits, the dwarf and the elf, then?". But it wasn't Jackson's fault about the Arabs...that was all Tolkien.

  • Hard News: Holiday Musings,

LOL Gio, you MAMEr. I love it to, have it on the PDA. Galaga in my pocket. I was kicked out of a flat in Australia because I beat the lease holder's high score.

I'm surprised you ever found Asteroids playable - it was a complete flop at the arcades. Too much realism!

And Q*bert is on my phone, with the added feature - I can stop the game in the middle, and continue on later.

You're right that is a walk through memory lane. My business partner wants us to move into writing games, and I keep telling him that it's not like the old days when a good idea and a hard couple of months coding was enough to make a winner. Nowadays games are made by teams larger than those that make movies. Blizzard has a cast of over 5000 people working on WoW full time. Doesn't sound like fun to me.

  • Hard News: Holiday Musings,

Heh, Islander, you forgot to say "it's unhealthy".

I actually don't play console games. I have a PS3, but no games for it. But that's mainly because I know I'll get hooked (again).

Funny, you know most of those criticisms you have of games apply in spades to reading books, watching movies, dvds, talking, walking and fishing. Except the violence (I presume you don't use your edged weapons).

Life is a grind. When you stop grinding, you're dead.

  • Speaker: Towards a realistic drug policy,

Getting really stoned is a complete pain in the ass as a grown-up. You can't do anything, and it's not really even pleasant.

You can't do everything, that's for sure. But I'd dispute that it's not pleasant. It can be unpleasant if you are called upon, but if you really don't actually have to do anything, if you are actually without responsibilities for the time, and the setting is right, then it can be nice. Like watching a movie - all you have to do is sit there for a couple of hours, eating and drinking. That said, it actually didn't make Avatar better - I think it affects your depth perception, and I found it rather off-putting.

Isn't the whole idea to be able to assess your intake and not overdo it, just as you don't gulp a whole lot of booze every time you get near some?

Took me a while to get this idea. Same goes for booze, actually. And TBH, for the effects socially, I definitely prefer booze. A small amount.

    In short, correlation ≠ causation.

Yeah, indeed also, if there is correlation, often the cause and effect are confused.

That said, I don't think pot helps the certified deranged any.

  • Hard News: Holiday Musings,

I'm sorry if I'm a bit snappy, but FFS, is it OK for me to have had an average time at this movie and think parts of it were totally not-fun and really stupid? Because that's what happened.

    I'm sorry for your loss.

Sure, but before that you said that your reasons for liking Avatar were the same as your reasons for liking computer action games.

Yes, my reasons. You may have different reasons for liking computer games. But I have noticed some uniformity in the people who hate computer games. First and foremost, their age.
