Does he tend to say yes or no based on an evaluation of the person asking? Or is it fairly automatic, anyone who wants a free one can have it?

I find it hard to see what the fuss is about. They can't very well have a hermaphrodite games, so if she wants to consider herself a woman, that's where it ends. Maybe it's unfair on the other women, but so is failing to be of 'athletic build', and they don't legislate a special games for that.

I had a friend who was mighty proud to call himself a left-wing fascist. He styled this position around Stalin. Curiously, he became an ACT voter.

Gio, how does that work? Does the owner give the free coffee as he sees fit?

I really think it's less about not knowing what they're missing and more just an ingrained cultural disinterest in coffee, in the sense of the urban national identity we've elevated our coffee cult(ure) to.

For certain. It's a bit like how most people feel when some car enthusiast criticizes the slightest slackness in one's car care. Seinfeld took it to beautiful hyperbole in one episode, where his mechanic actually kidnaps his car because he has failed to swap his wheels around periodically, and everyone knows that 51% of turns are to the right (in the US), so the wheels wear down unevenly.

The French are not famous for liking criticism. But I can't think of anyone who is. I can think of a dozen reasons why I wouldn't let a random stranger from some unknown backwater get behind my counter, much less touch my expensive machine. But kicking them out? Non!

Much though I hate to say it, I think this approach would probably work better in America than it would in Europe. They'd take it only as a criticism of their ineptitude, rather than their entire culture and history.

Does this mean they shouldn't get to vote on electoral change? No, but as I said to one young man at the Backbencher on Wednesday, nor is occasionally voting to change or retain electoral law a right, or even a good thing.

I thought it was a good thing last time I did it (despite voting against, I'm somewhat embarrassed to say).

Legal Beagle already has a thread on this.

I'm inclined to also doubt the motives of National, but I always do, on pretty much everything. That doesn't mean that a referendum is a bad idea, just that it ought to be done properly.

Perhaps the solution to London coffee is simply to take your own machine. The brave could even take it down to the cafe to really rub it in, but it would be sufficient to just be able to make one in whatever cupboard one is renting/bludging.

    This has two effects:
    1. It brings better coffee to the poor unfortunate natives, who know not what they drink.
    2. It makes you appreciate how hard it actually is to make the kind of coffee we like.

I find the idea that he moved to Queensland and has been carrying on from there quite believable - in fact I think he came from Australia in the first place. I lived there for a number of years and got pretty well tuned in to the differences in the way people speak. The most classic is when he fails to understand words that are fairly common here, particularly when they use the word differently in Australia, so he isn't careful to search his kiwi lexicon. Who in NZ calls a Dairy a Milk Bar? And more importantly, what NZer would not know what a Dairy is?
