I listen to Morning Report on the way to work, and Checkpoint on the way home. Like Craig, I wasn't particularly impressed with Sean Plunkett and Mary Wilson's "ask the same question 12 times even when it's obvious the answer will not be forthcoming" style, and Sean Plunkett seemed sometimes to be like Duncan Garner - always looking for a "gotcha" at the expense of actually reporting on something.

I like Suzie Ferguson - although I note this morning Geoff Robinson was back, so maybe she'll only ever be used as a fill-in. I think Simon Mercep is still trying to interview like he did on Fair Go, still trying to crusade rather than interview. I hate the "coming up" bits, and the spreading of a 5-minute report into 3 or 4 1 minute pieces - we're all grown-ups, we can concentrate on one thing for that long, this isn't TV news. There's probably more, but this'll do for now.

  • Hard News: Christchurch: Square Two,

Yeah, there seem to be increased opinions being voiced of "Why are you still living in Christchurch, it's be better to bowl the whole place and start again, it's going to be too expensive to fix"

Just how much MORE expensive would it be to relocate and rebuild, not to mention what do you do with everything and everyone while you're doing that? The next person who says "Why are people still living in Christchurch" needs to turn it round and think about what they'd do in the same situation. You have friends, family, a job, kids in school - you can't just uproot all of that and just go somewhere else......

  • Hard News: Here's one I prepared earlier,

Chicken, in the work cafeteria. Extreme weight loss. Two days in bed. The flat I was in had an outisde toilet as well as an inside one, so I thought I'd take pity on my flatmates and do any business that needed doing in the outside one. Only flaw in that plan was that the urge to DO STUFF came on FAR too quickly to even begin to make it all the way outside. Sorry, flatmates :(

  • Field Theory: Gruts,

Boxer-free zone here - put that down to my advanced age. They may be fine for pyjamas, but no one really wears them as underpants do they? And I've been through more than my fair share of uncomfortable underpants, mainly due to buying the cheapest pairs possible, But there's a reason they're cheap - not quite enough material, elastic that breaks/stretches, material that wears through in a couple of months, especially around the waist band.

Jockey multi-packs from Farmers are good though - although there is a bit of variation in fit between packets. I woulsn't even consider spending more than $10 on a single pair of underpants, even if they were fur lined and more comfortable than a really comfortable thing..... it would just feel wrong

  • Hard News: And we may never meet again ...,

That looks like a nice turntable - this may be a silly question, but have you checked your amp has a "ground" connector for the turntable (I'm assuming it has, if you've already checked that it's got a phono input).

The USB-direct turntables I've seen invariably look a bit tinny and plastic, and I have no idea whether you can swap their headshells or styluses for anything decent - that's always put me off them. I really really want one of these but they're about $500 and never on special. I'll have to live with my 30 year old Sansui for a bit longer :(
