  • Hard News: Friday Music: Original Beats, in reply to Robyn Gallagher,

When I was listening to hip hop when I was a teen in the ’90s, it was full of sexual lyrics.

Bling and babes go back to the earliest of days, albeit here with some humour

I know the fly young lady would like to ride
    In my mercedes, 'young ladies'
    In my mercedes, 'young ladies'
If my Mercedes breakdown and dull my grill
I will drive up in a new Seville
If my Seville break down, I take it back
I will dull my grill in a new Cadillac
If my Cadillac break down, it's too much
I will shock your mind in a new Star Stutz
And if a Stutz break down, I make another choice
I will dull my grill in a new Rolls Royce
And if a Royce break down, I'll be out in the rain
And then forget it, forget it, forget it, forget it, forget it
    Huh, take the train

(Superappin' - Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, 1979)

GMF & TFF were bragging (and political) more than sexy but Flash was able to come up with this lyric (which I won't reprint) on his first solo album. Yeech.

And the Rolling Stones and the Beatles trying to emulate the blues and R&B records that came across the Atlantic, then taking it back to America.

There's an interview with Lennon somewhere where he says, and I badly misquote I'm sure, but .. "We just wanted to be The Shirelles, Arthur Alexander and The Miracles but we got it wrong". And of course that wrong is what made it work.

To add to that too, a primary reason those were uploaded to Pinterest was that non-Aucklanders would have the opportunity to see the covers now on the walls of the Tyler Street Garage.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Bringing the…, in reply to Moz,

I’m now curious about why this was done. It doesn’t seem to be “so people can buy them”, and “so people will hear them” is limited to Spotify listeners who either use random play or whatever “recommend stuff” options spotify uses and it happens to suggest these ones

"“so people will hear them” (without having to purchase) is limited to people who are on Spotify. There’s no “recommend stuff” required. The titles of all the albums are on that Pinterest and thus searchable. Over time I’ll add Spotify URLs to each but that’s about 8 hours work as it is and time restraints have meant I’ve not been able spend more hours searching for those on 150 titles (the first handful already have these links).

But as I say, a quick search of Spotify (which is free if you so require) will give you 90% of those albums in a jiffy. iTunes will give you 100% of these albums.

Not quite sure how much easier it could be.

  • Hard News: What rules are these?,

For all Lorde’s talents – and they are many – it is the media that have propelled her into the living room of American and beyond and made her arguably the most famous NewZealander in the world right now.

Fuck - seriously? I'd give substantially more credit to a) her own determination, b) Adam Holt, c) Bandcamp, d) net buzz.

She was well on her way long before the SST or any such similar "media" bothered with her name. Two years ago I was in record company offices where her impending success was touted. As always, these people follow, they don't create.

  • Hard News: Sneaking it out of the shop:…, in reply to Grant McDougall,

Slight mistake in the Judith Tizard pic, btw: It says "1996" but National were in gov't then and won that year's election, too. "1999" maybe ?

Well spotted Grant. It's 1996 but JT was minister in waiting. Fixed.

Here's another that might work for you too:

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Record Store Day, in reply to Russell Brown,

The Spelling Mistakes (and some helpers) performing ‘Feels So Good’

Trivia: We never could work out what it was called. The front cover of the original release was 'Feel So Good' (as was the APRA registration) but the labels and back cover are 'Feels So Good' (as here).

In recent years we've all decided that we can't decide and 34 years on it doesn't matter. The 2012 7" reissue intentionally repeated the two versions of the title.
