  • Hard News: History is now,

It's hardly surprising it might drop a bit the following day. Honestly James, try reality. You might find it a pleasant change.

Amen. I hope the next few weeks are not spent watching the market vote on every utterance Obama makes. Markets are in a phase of highly unpredictable volatility, so tying anything they do to particular events is nuts. It's like standing at the water's edge at Piha during a storm and trying to tie every surge to ocean sentiments. Obama is hopefully a contrary wind, that may take the storm away, but don't expect hearing about it to stop this nasty wave smashing you to pieces.

  • Hard News: History is now,

As a software designer I couldn't help but notice that whoever made the awesome touchscreen thing needed to rethink putting controls on both sides of the screen so the presenter can't avoid having to put their hands in the way of the screen all the time. Touchscreens have always been a gimmick, except on a PDA.

Oh and you guys realize they weren't really holograms right? A cool effect, but still an effect.

I don't know why goats, they just seem....right.

Totally stoked by the result. But after watching 4 glorious news channels of Sky at home I went to Guy Fawkes at my folks who only had the public channels. Whichever ARSEHOLE at TV1 and 3 decided to interrupt Obama's speech with their own inane commentary on it, while it was actually LIVE, deserves a kick up the arse. Then they hand-picked the only bitter sounding part out of McCain's one, which I'd already heard on the radio during all the gracious bits. I will seriously never watch news on 1 or 3 by choice again. They suck goat's nobs.

  • Hard News: History is now,

I'm curious to what extent an Obama victory will affect the mood in NZ. I don't think it's really sunk in yet, because polls are still polls, but when (I'm feeling ready to say WHEN rather than IF now) Obama is on the news tonight, a lot of NZers will hear him for the first time, and realize just what a tectonic shift is actually happening over in the US. We can all ignore the economy (it's a rather silly talent), but Obama in the White House can't be ignored.

  • Hard News: History is now,

I think BBC trumped the Schadenfreude by interviewing John Bolton. He summed up everything wrong with the Republicans by claiming that McCain was far too centrist, and Palin had done a great deal to energize the base, a great asset. This was set against a backdrop curve showing just how many Americans were disagreeing with him right now. It was like a blue loop closing over his head.

He also gave a gleeful warning that Obama was the most radical Democratic candidate ever selected. I sure hope so, but Bolton saying it makes me doubt it now.

Craig, in answer to your question about the preference for a divided house, I'd say 'it's preferable if the opinion of the populace is generally divided'. But if they are showing a clear preference for, or aversion to, one of the major parties, then it's preferable that is represented in their representation at all the major levels.

So no, in other words, I would prefer it if the newly elected President has the power to do some things his party believes in. If it's Obama, that is.
