Having been gay for a bit longer that three hours, David, I'd be happy to give you gay-lessons (by correspondence, given that I'm currently in Toronto). You'll have to find someone else to school you on the uke, though.

Thanks for the offer, Eddie. I’m hoping to find someone who’ll cover both topics, but I’ll be in touch if I can’t find anyone suitable.

Funnily enough, I may well be in Canada next year – but Edmonton rather than Toronto.

I think I’m going to ask everyone to refer to me by that name from now on…

Wasn't his career tragically cut short by an accident with a hedge-trimmer?

For those of you who don’t know, I recently severed my hand off with an electric hedge-trimmer (according to my version of the story)… or slightly cut my arm with a hedge-trimmer while being silly (according to other people’s version of the story). At any rate, that’s why my blogs have been short and infrequent for the last few weeks.

  • Southerly: I've Turned Gay for Public Address,

You really should put the extra effort in and take up a weird-shit religion as well.

I seem to recall that there was once a schism in the Russian orthodox church between the traditionalists who made the sign of the crucifix with two fingers extended, and the reactionaries who decided to make the sign of the crucifix with three fingers extended -- to represent the father, son, and holy ghost.

This caused a serious religious rift, and it was only settled when the church hierarchy rounded up the dissenters, executed their ringleaders, and chopped three fingers off each hand of everyone they left alive -- so that they could only make the sign of the crucifix with two fingers.

This is a roundabout way of saying that maybe I should revive the whole Russian Orthodox three-fingered thing...

Cheers for the uke love, DS!

Is DS my new ukulele-mafia name? If so, I'm honoured!

Yep, I'm getting so sick of travelling with my guitar (and my bass is a million times worse) that I'm seriously contemplating investing in a soprano uke.

And, yes, Jason Tagg is a genius -- and it's great that he posts the lyrics and chords for his songs on his website. And yay for ex-Dunedinites. I'm quite the fan of both him and Heather Lev.

Alas, that no-one else seems to understand my new-found appreciation of the ukulele. Emma, a young person of my acquaintance, even told me that ukuleles are"totally gay".

By the way, the use of the word 'gay' as a synonym for naff is something that I used to strongly dislike. But now that I'm gay myself, I fucking hate it.

[P.S. Just to clarify, not the Emma posting below, by the way.]

  • Radiation: And the Shortie killer is ...,

What a bizarre co-incidence, GemmaG -- a few minutes ago I almost posted a video clip of you singing 'Haere Mai' at the Chelsea Hotel.

But, sorry to say, I bumped you for a nude ukulele duo singing 'Tiny Bubbles'...

  • OnPoint: Terra Firma,

It may be strange coming back home to New Zealand, Keith -- but I, for one, am very glad you did. We so need people who can write coherent, sensible, and non-partisan news analysis like this...

Have you ever thought about running training courses for newspaper editors?

  • Southerly: Religious 'Innovations' for Christmas,

What a knowledgeable bunch you are on the subject of vibrators -- I've learnt so much (particularly from Rob Stowell's link)! Maybe this would be a good topic for an episode of PA Science?

And thanks for posting the video clip from John Safran, Graeme. It sums up the whole Dalai Lama thing brilliantly. It's astonishing that some of his less-admirable edicts have been so glossed over. I guess that's the power of good marketing.

P.S. Just rushing off to put in my order for a copy of the 'Nuns Having Fun' calendar.

I'm really enjoying these posts, Damian -- great stuff. And very much looking forward to hearing the audio on PA Radio.

Oh, don't get me started on 'guttered' and its ilk. I seem to be surrounded by people who suffer from some weird pseudo-homonym dyslexia...

"One 'foul' swoop" (or even "one 'fowl' swoop") instead of "one fell swoop"

"On 'tenderhooks'" instead of "on tenterhooks"

    etc., etc.

A recent favourite is "I wouldn't 'trust' him with a ten foot barge pole". Which, actually, is kind of an improvement on the original, now that I think of it.
