  • Hard News: "OK Boomer" wins Public…,

do not like the term its implications of age war.
I am way too old to be a boomer, but I guess my kids fit the bill.
It is so sweepingly inaccurate. Rachel Carson was author of book of the month when I was still at school.
It is not about age or generational culture. It is about greed and capitalism.

  • Hard News: Memories of the news,

The headmaster telling the school that Roosevelt had died and making more of it than my family had over breakfast.
Very clear memories of the NZHerald front page on VE Day had the royal family pic, first time page one was not solid classifieds.

  • Hard News: A thundering clash of,

    Very good work, Russell.
Why did an extremely loveable onetime-solo-mum bring herself and her party to this point when the always unsympathetic treasury wonk get away with much worse?
He paid it back. He followed legal advice. He did not strike a defiant public position.
I am so depressed by so many old friends and warriors-in-arms who are snarling about white male privilege, etc, etc
    it is lawyer's advice 101
    Pay up,
    say you were mistaken

  • Hard News: More than a bang on the head,

I am long past retirement from work or active sport, and despite indulging in my time in an unfair amount of recreational chemical indulgence I can truthfully say my only medical issues come from sport and manual work.

  • Hard News: Fix up, young men,

European soccer had similar crap behaviour from bullies in large crowds. The solution involves identification, criminal prosecution and bans from future festivals.

it is not realistic to expect censure from individuals to be at effective, Blaming the non offenders does not make sense.
It is up to festival organisers, public authorities owning the amenities and the police.
The rest of us should focus on demanding better surveillance and prosecution

  • Polity: An Orwellian Alice in Wonderland, in reply to Kumara Republic,

Our partisan confrontations are not much like the US.
In 1981, the greater community took to the streets or bought tickets to the games, depending on their convictions, It was debated at breakfast tables, in the pubs, school staff rooms.
.But the crazy christian vote and the talkback red necks never win out or gain power. They are no more successful that the socialists.
Looking soft in dealing with Australia or US governments, is not the way to winning elections here.

  • Hard News: A better thing to believe in,

Sad days for me when a prime minister who makes my skin crawl, takes over the All Blacks and captain Richie McCaw.

i love rugby played well, and in my time have cheered for Campese and Horan, and those wonderful French who wrecked the arrogant blacks that day when only Lomu was worthy of his jersey.
mccaw and Hansen have created a truly great team, although I suspect there are a couple of celebrity choices in the squad, but while Key hovers over them I will hoping the Irish(with the only Northlander at the cup, or some brilliant unknowns become the heroes of the tournament.

  • Hard News: Rugby has a problem,

There are too many rugby matches with pointless conference structures, and outside the world cup it all turns into a blur, saved in New Zealand's case by a consistently admirable and successful test team.
There are too many cricket matches with pointless international tournaments and outside some form of world cup it allturns into a blur, saved this year in New Zealand's caseby an admirable ans successful international team.
Variations on this formula can be repeated on every televised major sport, but the tv demands for sports games/replays/hype for the variously bored consumers on couches with a pack of beer to hand.
Nobody with any kind ofpassion in life needs any of this stuff.
