Oh dear, are we going there again?

What ever happened to the days of theatre-ing a thread?

  • Hard News: More Wikipedia Scanning,

Kyle I think the good people of Manukau and Waitakere cities, and parts of Franklin district, may have issues with you cutting them off along with Auckland City if you dig at Drury. Severing the bridges at Mangere and Pakuranga would be more effectively targeted at Banks ;-)

Word on Facebook is that Martyn Bradbury, aka Bomber, is running for the Auckland mayoralty...

  • Hard News: More Wikipedia Scanning,

the left is a messy mix of Labour/Greens/Alliance.

I don't perceive City Vision as being as messy as the alternatives, namely a divided left in Auckland City, allowing Cits and Rats to win by default every time. Certainly they are good at running campaigns and are out of the blocks well before their opposition this time around. They have some good candidates too - a high level of diversity, and they've had fortunate retirements from some of those more interested in being councillors than being centre-left. (I should of course disclose that I am a supporter of CV, help out with stuff, and have friends and relations who are candidates.)

Craig pointed to the appalling coverage the Herald makes of local body politics in Auckland and I have to agree. They are totally focused on the Auckland City mayoralty, and seem to forget that there are other cities, and indeed whole councils, community boards and district health boards, to be elected in their circulation area.

But it is slightly better than the community newspapers who basically refuse to cover anything about the actual elections. Yes they will cover fights at community boards or on council (very rarely) but in terms of the actual democratic election of these positions you would be forgiven for thinking that they weren't happening in a few months, if you relied on The Aucklander or the Central Leader stable for your local body news.

I don't see why the killer has to be one person, it could be a copy cat. Also have they shared the cause of death for either of them?

Plus, I just found out yesterday that there is an omnibus edition of Shortie on Sunday mornings. I'm not sure whether this is a good thing or a bad thing...

Anyone else disappointed by what was an unrelentingly silly episode of Dr Who last night? Thank goodness it was only a Xmas special.

  • Hard News: Evil,

Kindly forgive the "emotional woman" in this debate, but I really do not see why Dewar's obstruction was not relevant to the other trials.

How many times did we hear that Nicholas had made rape allegations against another policeman and he was acquitted? How many times was this held up as evidence that Nicholas could not be telling the truth? More than I can remember. And that case was the Murupara case, where we now know Dewar played a pivotal role in bringing about that "acquittal".

You can all calmly and dispassionately debate the legal technicialities, but I find it hard to stomach. I would welcome some comments from other XXers on this thread, whether they agree with me or not!

  • Hard News: Evil,

But surely Graeme the finding that Dewar obstructed the course of justice was relevant to the other trials, particularly in regard to the evidence given to discredit Nicholas about the Murupara case?

I just find it so frustrating that we seem unable to have a fair legal system in this country that can find powerful men guilty of rape. Yesterday's verdict makes me feel slightly better, but it's not enough.

  • Hard News: Evil,

I wonder at the sense in the ordering of these trials. Surely if Dewar had gone first we might have seen different outcomes in other cases?

  • Hard News: Feckless Solutions,

On the issue of Plunket nurses, we have one in the family and she works in Otara. One of the biggest problems she faces, in accessing families in need to give them support, is transience. If people could afford decent housing, and afford to stay in that decent housing instead of having to move all the time, then that would make her job a lot easier.

Also a lot of families are hard to find when they do move - and that is deliberate. Because they have debts that they cannot pay they don't register on the electoral role (meaning they also cannot vote) or make it well known with social agencies where they are going.

This facet of it comes back to lifting income levels - something I don't see a National govt delivering anytime soon.
