  • Southerly: E=mc^2... Your Views,

I've been reading economic opinion columns lately (Bernard Hickey, Gareth Morgan) and whatever the merits of their columns, the discussions underneath look eerily like this blog.

    David, YOU are the genius.

  • Southerly: England's Pleasant Pastures Seen,

Nice blog David. You are a master at pointing out that the glass is , actually, half empty.
    Love it

  • Hard News: A bit tacky, no?,

I find it interesting how Winston always seems to refer to the media as "these people" or "you people". I think it invokes a sense of conspiracy that obviously resonates with his supporters.

    Just a thought

  • Hard News: Fibre Coming Soon! Ish ...,

I believe that fibre to the home is quickly going to be obsolete technology. wireless networking (ie 802.11n) can already transmit super fast speeds and is only going to get better (WiMax, faster cellular data speeds) so digging up every street at $150K per kilometer (!!!) seems ridiculous to me when you can build a fast wireless network probably for a fraction of that price.
John Key may sit down at his desk for his internet but the trend is towards ever more mobile devices and ever more wireless internet. I think the expensive fibre will be a stranded asset when new wireless networks are built. I'm considering cutting my phone line.

Here's my idea (warning: I'm no expert):
    - invest plenty of money in upgrading the internet backbone and the undersea cables that link us to the rest of the world.
    - bring that fibre to every town (it's probably already there)
    - do the last mile via wireless

  • Island Life: Rage against the machines,

I thought hard drives exoskeletons were made from aluminium and thus melt at a lower temperature (660.32 °C according to wikipedia). It's the fibreglass circuit boards that will probably survive longest.

My suggestion is a combination of several ideas to recreate the final scenes from Terminator II.

Scene 1: dunk drives in liquid nitrogen and drop/smash into lots of little pieces.
Scene 2: put pieces in kiln to melt into little ingots.
possible Scene 3: if the little molten pieces start rolling towards each other then RUN LIKE HELL

Russell you bear a heavy responsibility because I depend on you to give me a balanced, well researched view of current events. You did just that on the events in Tibet. Thanks

  • Island Life: Won't Somebody Think Of The…,

    Hi David

I agree with your thoughts on being inventive and entrepreneurial. I have an overactive mind and am constantly coming up with ideas or inventions but I don't have that entrepreneurial skill/experience to turn those ideas into reality and have yet to find anyone who is supportive enough here to help me with it. Any ideas?
I'm just finishing a PhD in plant biotechnology and guess what I'm thinking of getting into next year? Housing. A bit sad eh?
(OK, so what I'm planning is anything but boring and ordinary but still...)
