  • Hard News: Back in Christchurch, in reply to Russell Brown,

I spend a lot of time cycling up dem dere hills I'm always surprised at how many people are out walking/running cycling, the Port Hills are such a natural asset and this transplanted Aucklander is very grateful for there existence

  • Hard News: Rugby has a problem,

like a leeming over a cliff I continue to support the Blues, not a happy pastime here in Crusader country. Not having sky I rarely watch any games (I occasionally stream a game).. Yes too much rugby. the last great game I saw was a match at the local park played between two passionate teams of teenagers, full of urgency and cuss words

  • Up Front: Egypt: It's Complicated,

I travelled through Egypt 20 years ago with my sister, my memories are a little faded but I do remember loving the noisy chaos of Cairo. I had my pokerface dont make eye contact look polished up in India so no problems ignoring the touts. The tricky bit is engaging with the locals when it feels like everyone you meet wants something from you... all time favourite spot Mt Sinai at sunset

  • Field Theory: Red versus Green,

I've always disliked the colour red, unfortunately green is 'her indoors' default colour whenever she feels the need to by me a nice shirt...fuck I hate green shirts but they still win out over red.
I always thought the welsh logo was celery stalks (another food group)?

  • Hard News: When "common sense" isn't, in reply to Richard Wain,

IMHO: helmets don't stop death. You hit the road or a car with your head, you're fucked. Making cyclists wear helmets is a bandaid... cycle lanes is the answer, and decent penalties for the drivers who atually infringe

With you on that one Richard, the bike has been my happy place for the last 10 or so years, 2 years ago I got rid of the car so I had to ride rain, hail or whatever. I always wear a hi-vis vest. 1 to stop the easterly, 2 on the off chance someone will spot me., Roundabouts are death waiting to happen for cyclists check out the curbs on roundabout exits, always flattened and tyre marked by the truck trailers. Where there is no alternative I always get out into the middle of the lane and pedal like a mad man. On helmets; her indoors won't ride because of "helmet hair" so no tandem until there's a law or fashion change

  • Hard News: MegaBox: From f**k-all to zero,

I am a simple blue collar boy who still enjoys The Weekend Press more for the ritual aspect as there are more adds than hard copy. I have always used ad-block for much of the same reason idiot savant lists but I've often wondered how a site like this one makes it coin, sounds like it doesn't.... ok so adblock now disabled for p/address will be clicking away

  • Field Theory: Yellow wristband, White flag,

so a champion doper beat the other dopes ...http://deadspin.com/5937591/all-seven-of-lance-armstrongs-tour-de-france-wins-would-now-go-to-cyclists-with-doping-scandals-of-their-own
if they are all carrying an extra litre or so of blood.. things are even, poor argument I know, but if everyone is doing it you still have to turn the pedals to win.

  • Field Theory: Fight Club,

I suspect most men have been in a similar situation and if they haven't it probably means they ain't lived long enough, 20 years ago the bird would have been followed by a screech of tyres then grunts as the punches flew...now we have dialogue. I consider that progress
