  • Sacha,

The consonant is more dangerous than the vowel of the species.

  • Joe Wylie,

the last recent skeletal remains of which come from Trotters Gorge . . .

Trotter, eh? That's just the sort of thing he'd do to piss off the Greens.

  • JP Hansen,

I've been walking in the Waitakeres Ark In The Park in the Cascades area almost daily since my youngest started school 2 weeks back before starting work (I drive past it between Waitakere Primary & home). Been trying to spot or even hear a Kokako, of course (there are 5 in there now, with another 4 to be released this week and up to 30 in the long term).

No luck yet, nor have I been able to spot a stichbird. I do wish someone would knock off all the damn sulphur-crested cockatoos that have taken over. Bloody loudmouth Aussies.

There are a pair of North Island Robins who I spot almost every time in the same general area on the Auckland City Walk, and are the most gorgeous, friendly little critters you'd ever want to see. So my vote has gone to the Robin.

Pukeko are so bloody commercial now too, on plates, cups, ceramic ones for the garden, stuffed toys. Overexposed, they are. Had their day in the sun. Sell outs.

    Also, congratulations on the engagement!

  • Kim Wilson,

Very best wishes to you and Rebecca, Damian.

Having moved to on the edge of nowhere from Auckland, I'm constantly delighted at the birds round home - I felt very fortunate to have spotted a ruru whilst heading up the drive one evening. I've not spotted any tui, but there are bucketloads of bellbirds and fantails around. Magic. I'd like to spread my vote around all of the birds.

  • Tracy Pilet,

    Kereru (wood pigeon)

Never though much of them until two huge trees down the street were chopped down within a few weeks of each other. I knew there were one or two birds living in them but the day the second tree went down the power lines across the road looked like something out of a Hitchcock movie; about a dozen kereru and white pigeons all strung along one wire. They looked pissed, as well they might.

Over the weeks since the numbers have gradually fallen away. I hope they’ve found somewhere else to live and haven’t been picked off by the neighbourhood cats. This weekend there was just one sad looking wood pigeon sitting there on his own.

    Poor fella.

  • Mark Graham,

Congrats on the pending nuptials - you DO have a date, yes?

And I'm with Sofie - what was it exactly that Banks was supposed to have done, other than appear humble (with the odd slip and return to form)? I've been watching closely and it seems to me the only thing he has done is cut much needed spending on infrastructure - deferred maintenance identified by Standard and Poors as the reason Auckland remains on credit watch (thank you CitRats - not) - to reduce rates increases. Bollocks to Banksie, I say.

That's 2 at least :) I rather like "Bollocks to Banksie" as a slogan, or a protest banner.
