  • Emma Hart,

How do bulk coffee grounds do in a worm farm?

I found out about the coffee thing at the Aotearoa Digital Arts symposium a couple of years ago. As you do. There was a guy there with a box full of worms being fed on nothing but coffee grounds and shredded copies of old computing magazines and software manuals. They seemed quite happy.

If you added cans of coke I'd say the worms were actually year three computer science students.

  • Ian Dalziel,

I'm getting a lot of fruitflies in our worm farm. This is a pain, as it's only about ten feet from our kitchen door, so we always have fruit flies in the kitchen. Any suggestions for keeping the fruit flies down without affecting the worms?

I understand fruitflies only live 24 hours,
maybe you could try putting the clock in
the kitchen forward a few hours to fool them
    into clocking out early...

Daylight saving must really ruffle their feathers

If it were tea leaves, I guess it be old copies of NZWW or Hanover Finance annual reports?

  • Damian Christie,

I've noticed my lettuces starting to grow upwards rather than leafing out - could be because I haven't plucked much off them lately, or could be they're trying to move towards flowering or whatever it is they do - is it okay to pick the hearts out of them or will that f__k them well and proper?

  • Damian Christie,

And yeah, my worm farm has gone a bit quiet recently. To begin with they barely ate anything at all, so I scaled back the feeding, then kinda forgot about them. They're still there and wriggling around, but they've gone back to the bottom of the three-tiered wormfarm thingy rather than the top layer where the food is. I'm tempted to add another box o' worms, get a bit of competition in there...

I think you'll find that you owning two boxes of worms is just further monopoly. You need to sell your worms in a fire sale to David Richwhite he will break them down to parts and hock them off at great profit. You'll then have to contract in external worms who will have no public service ethic.

It is called "bolting". You can continue to pick leaves but it is around this time that I pass them on to the bunnies next door.

  • Louise,

After a couple of years of planting small quantities of a large number of veges I now stick to fewer veges and herbs in larger quantities - beans, peas, strawberries, tomatoes and herbs. The best cropper was last year's Purple King climbing beans. About 12 plants produced enough for a couple of adults eating them most nights and giving a heap away to friends and family. This year I planted some beans that a friend saved from last year but they're nowhere near as prolific. The only disappointment with Purple King is that the cool purple colour of the pods turns to green when they're cooked.

Bulk anything is probably not the best. I try to give worms a varied diet. An occasional sprinkle of lime keeps the food sweet, and you could sprinkle a layer of soil over as well. The soil could keep the fruitflies away, too.

Coffee grounds are excellent soil conditioners and good for lawns.

1968? You should never presume I am that well read (or that old). I love the idea of different coloured suns and watermelons. I reckon it would be some kind of ecstasy to eat green or blue or golden watermelon.
My house is 'coloured'. Multi-coloured. Colour is cool.

Actually, I'm stealing Ian's jokes from another blog. And as to being old, that year is central to my very being. Or my being at all.

  • Ngaire BookieMonster,

Have just found out we’re moving to a house that has an already staked out vege garden (in need of tidying) plus a greenhouse.

I am SO excited. I’m going to go for tomatoes all year round. My worm farm is going to be in heaven.

And I’m going to plant nasturtiums (good tip) because then I can cast them. Geddit?

Terrible puns aside, I’m so thrilled we will finally have space for a decent garden and have a shed and a good garage and a greenhouse. AND we don’t have to pay anywhere near as much in rent for it. *waves buh-bye Auckland*
