If you are really perverse, you could always go to the Parachute Festival at Mystery Creek this weekend. Why do Christians have to colonise everything--music is quite properly the property of the devil ;-)
A journalist of my acquaintance who grew up going to church and thence to Parachute assures me that there was much more devillish behaviour at Parachute than is commonly acknowledged ;-)
Like everybody really stays in their own tent.

I saw Smashing Pumpkins at that first BDO, and to this day it amazes me when someone mentions how great they are.
I was like, 19, and I can’t remember if that was the BDO I tried acid, but it probably was. It was sunny and I had made the trip up from Wellington and there were squillions of hot Auckland girls in bikinis and I was sitting on the grass drinking beer and looking at my hands and looking at the girls and looking at the sun and looking at the Pumpkins and smiling and laughing at it all.
So you could say, it wasn’t the most objective music review ever.

I went a few times growing up, and had plenty of "first" experiences in that context. One time the organisers called the police down to our tent, because they were sure we were up to no good. They didn't find anything, of course. That was the summer in which we bought up a lot of a then unknown chemical we knew as "bzp". Everybody wondered why we were dancing insanely for 10 hours at a stretch...

Or Crowe's Road...
whatever else one may say or think about him
that was a good gig that mr le Roq ran there...
Auckland sorely needed an all ages venue -

the lead singer had a light in his mouth.

For those who are wondering how he did that.
I can sleep easy again. But, seriously, would be fun to sneak into a kids room at night and make a spooky ‘bwahahaha’ noise with grinning bright iridescent green teeth.
What?

Those LED teeth thingies are pretty cool, but I think he actually used wired LED lights in his mouth.

Dude! That was the night my dear, departed friend Claire gave me some of her acid when she really didn't have to. She was like that.

The interesting thing about Parachute is that it has always been seen as an excuse for teens to have sex, drink and do drugs. Whether or not you think that dilutes the Christian theme of the festival (I don't, since I think those things are what any teenagers in that context will always do) it's certainly never been about denying the pleasures of the flesh.

I never saw them at the BDO, but I did see them at the Supertop during the Mellon Collie tour, and to this day that still stands out as my favourite live concert ever.
It was everything a rock concert should be: loud guitars, sweaty crowds, and hardly any frills. About the only thing they had in the way of a light show was some cheap and crappy projector showing "trippy" marbled images on the back wall. And Jimmy Chamberlain kept playing even when the rain started leaking through the tent roof right on top of him. Billy was not overly chatty, but they gave 100% to every song they played, and seemed to be enjoying it as much as the thousands of teenagers who were singing along to every word.

re Parachute. Teenagers will be teenagers but what concerns me more is the slightly creepy religious types praying (preying?) on gullible teens.
