  • Rich of Observationz,

Although does anyone else find the whole Movember thing is actually getting a bit too ubiquitous?

    Yes. Me.

It's a real mainstream thing as well. None of my social circle has grown any lip fluff. Everyone at work apart from me and the two token women has, however.

And it looks crap. I'm almost about to get a green mohawk and donate some money to leftist campaigning causes, but I have this unfortunate need to earn money.

  • kmont,

Great pictures, I voted for you despite all your hating on Wellington. I love the Movember thing, it seriously tickles my sense of humor to see the range of mo's men from all walks of life can manage. For some it is strictly bumfluff, for others they can be proud that while they may be bowling ball on top they can do toilet brush on their upper lip.
While it does tickle my sense of humor none of that is going to be tickling my face, fortunately my birthday rolls around just when all this madness is finished and I am sure there will be a nice batch of freshly shaved gentlemen around town.

Is that a typo? I thought we nominated Don Christie?

  • Tom Beard,

I'm just disappointed by the ubiquity of the "handlebar"/porno-tache/Zapata styles, when there are so many others to choose from. I guess it's one way for the follicularly-challenged to look properly hirsute without actually growing much.

Oh, and I'm told that you were on the shortlist for another category, "Best Public Art", but that was a result of a couple of tragic typos :-)

An easy mistake to make, I am still trying to recover from trying to visualise Don as a Goth – (old Cracker from many moons ago).

  • Stephen Judd,

It was a stunning day, yes.

Last year's Movember caused enough conjugal strife to dissuade me from repeating it.

Yeah, I was thinking much the same today. It's like it's become the default Movember Mo. Although there is at least one 'personality' who - looking less than the picture of health at the best of times - has grown a 'tache resembling something you'd expect to see in a palliative care hospice in San Francisco in the early 80s...

  • Jeremy Andrew,

That's a new one on me, I'd heard of the pornstar mo, the Freddie Mercury mo, the dodgy scoutmaster mo and the overweight 80's aussie cricketer mo, but I wasn't aware of the dying-of-AIDS mo.

  • Gabor Toth,

Scattered throughout this blog are a few photos I’ve taken around town (Island Bay and Oriental Bay) on my new (old) Rolleiflex TLR.

Anyone who uses a Rollie TLR gets my vote (sort of like walking in the footsteps of Ans Westra.). Very Wellington...

    MO styles,

It has definately gone beyond tipping point....dangerous to diss though,,,,,its for charidee!

the porno, chopper reid style IS the least naff of the non "undercover cop" varieties....slightly ironic without strangers actually thinking you are....one of THEM!

Ive gone for the beardy this year, and any day now.....shave shave......out comes the wax!

I'd tend towards a Clark Gable, David Niven or Errol Flynn myself.

Totally OT (__was__ there a T?), but that just provoked a memory flash of the early 80s D-cops we used to encounter in Auckland.

They stood out like dog's balls in their dorky leisure shirts, which I presume they thought looked cool and streetwise.

Bugger. I thought I was voting for myself.

Still, I am sure I could use mistaken identity to stroll up and put together a few words totally dissing Wellington.

I am still trying to recover from trying to visualise Don as a Goth

Yes, I fell into the gap between punk and goth. I think it was called "neo rhomboid".

On the dissing theme I am using your blog for a plug for the opposition.

Brenda Wallace is a serious contender for the Dub Dub Dub and deserving nomination. Vote for brenda.

or the ones that used to wander Hight Street in their "cool" vinyl jackets that were never quite long enough to hide the handcuffs

I mean, great cause and all, but soooo many people are doing it

Yeah, that's why whenever someone tries to sell me a poppy or a pink ribbon I just tell them to fark off.

I say, vote for Teh Dropkicks.

If this Christie interloper wins we're staging a protest.

And if Richard MacManus links to the survey (as nominee #4 in the same category) then it's all over - not only for the other nominees in that category, but also for the Wellingtonista webservers, which will be reduced to slag heaps of melted silicon...

  • Jeremy Andrew,

    I'm speechless.

I was composing a post along the same lines, only longer, and more funnier, but no less ironic. Something about how those pink ribbons look really ugly if you don't colour coordinate your outfit to match them.
IO beat me with a blunt obje^H^H^H^H comment.

Its for 4 weeks. Its for a really good cause. Get over it!

  • Hadyn Green,

It was the Tui and Holden advertising for Movember that almost made me quit.

But I (surprise!) agree with Tom. Most guys are growing a handlebar because they think it looks cool, but then their facial hair and face shape let them down.

Grow the tache that suits you and you'll get much more kudos than just trying to emulate Lemmy (not the worst thing in the world).

I went for the Errol Flynn but being a ginger it didn't really fly, so I stuck with the "slug" and now I look like my Dad circa 1986

And Kowhai, I'm shocked you didn't vote for the Dropkicks! What happened to good old-fashioned nepotism?

i went for the chopper mo because it's kind of the most 'het' of all the taches.

    Che drank all the ale

and i'd do it again, damn it!!

  • Stephen Judd,

I assumed the popularity of the truck-driver mo was because it was clearly comedic, enabling the owner to signal that they're not really a moustache wearer and will be attractively clean-shaven and snoggable if you'd just wait until December.

And I think therein lies the difference between me and whoever that guy is that runs the National Party's youtube videos - I'm quite happy for you to plug the opposition on my own thread. At least you're all here. :)

And yes, I noticed that Richard McManus was the only person not sad enough (or possibly simply completely oblivious) to put a voting plug on his site...

    But seriously. Vote for me.
