And, dare I say it, the Cuba Street Carnival could have run for several years on the tab the Wellington City Council picked up for the Return of the King première -- which rather fucks up the philistine council narrative, I guess.
And I certainly remember being rubbished for suggesting that New Line -- which had cheerfully pocketed substantial tax breaks -- could have easily afforded to give Wellington rate-payers a little tax relief of their own.
-
One of the most important things about the Cuba St Carnival is that it's a free event. A free event with a usually impressive line-up of bands, who play for absolute peanuts. In this respect, the event has been under-funded for years.
So, $350,000 for an artwork celebrating sport? It is about art v sport. But it's not art or sport that started the argument, is it, publicly elected officials?

But with no extra information, when was the Carnival bid for extra money put in? It would be unusual to think that the Council wouldn't be spending large sums of money on the World Cup, so to ask for an extra $300k in that same year might have been excessive.

I for one would like to have the pastry vs. dolphins argument. It's long overdue.

True, although it is an 'off' year for the NZ Arts Festival, which usually frees up a few council funds... so where are they going?

<clasps head in hands>Oh yeah, the statue...</clasps head in hands>

Yeah, I guess casting it as rugby vs samba is counter-productive -- in fact although I personally am firmly in the samba camp, I'd hope there's some demographic overlap there.
I found the DomPost article very frustrating. Why did the carnival organisers want more? What does the council typically spend on large events? What's the big picture here?
Tell you what, "where do you stand on the Cuba St Carnival" is going to be a litmus test question for mayoral candidates as far as I'm concerned.

At $23million for 'upgrades' around Eden Park, plus a few million more in associated works, it bloody well is about the art versus sport.
Though, to be fair, $3m of that is for two Billy Apple in situ artworks.

It's also about art v public libraries, etc. Why is the Cuba carnival more important than books for all?
-
In Rio they're able to have both their Carnival and their national sport.
But I do think RWC 2011 could potentially end up as our Montreal '76. An ego trip that took 30 years to break even.
-
Dunno about MORE important -- but I can tell you why it IS important. Communal fun and spectacle is a part of civic life. It is part of what makes a city a city instead of a mere agglomeration of buildings and people.
In mind it is too soon to cast this as carnival vs anything without more information about how much money is going elsewhere.
-
Someone more cleverer than me could figure out Eden Park's new nickname - in Montreal the Olympic Stade is known as the Big O (for Owe). The City is still paying off the construction cost.
-
Yeah tell us about it ....
-
pastry versus dolphins ... you can have both.
Mmmm, dolphin pie.

And what the extra $300,000 was for. I think it can be presented as Event A and Event B. Event A has $450k against it and Event B has $200k against it (as far as we know). And go from there.
I for one would like to have the pastry vs. dolphins argument. It's long overdue.
What would be the porpoise of that? (Thank you, I'll be here all week)

as well as $100,000 for a cup village.
Some Mad Hatters’ Tea Party theme?

I can think of a lot more art (in quantity) and a lot better artists (in quality) (IMhO) than B Apple to spend $3m on. And possibly better places for it to be.
That's a whole other debate, but $3m for artistic paving seems somewhat rich. Nice work if you can get it. Would be good to see the concept, but can't find any reference to it, apart from briefly in AkCity meeting minutes.

If it really is about a statue vs a carnival, then I suspect it's about art vs art (ignoring an earlier thread).
There's lots of artworks on the road out to Wellington airport which are a tribute to Wellington weather, particularly wind. We would say that's money spent on art, not money on meteorology.

It's going to be a long year-and-a-bit if people spend it complaining about the Rugby World Cup. It's weird how reflexively negative some of my friends are about it.
And in that sense, it's an easy target for blame in this case.
But the proposed fugly statue doesn't have any direct connection to the tournament, am I right? It's an idea cooked up by the council and Weta?
In which case, it's Carnival vs Statue, not Carnival vs Sport.
-
I also feel compelled to suggest statue vs art.
-
Incidentally, my Wikipedia article on dolphin pastries was rejected. Something about "cetacean kneaded."

Rofflenui!

because at the CCC, people walk around in the nude.
my suspicion is the WCC is concerned about cost-blow-out for the RWC. a ciy councillor used to be my land-lady and she indicated pretty clearly that rates would be increasing in the near future to fund "stuff".
