It's probably also worth mentioning the performance of our cyclists at the track worlds in Beijing; notably because one member of our women's pursuit team had never ridden on a track before about 10 weeks ago. They got gold, against some pretty stiff competition. Go the girls!

There's not much sport on at the moment, is there? Luckily what there is (Aussie Open, Aus v SA cricket) is at very civilised viewing times...
It was nice to meet you ! Here's my disgraceful Moustache effort from 2007's Movember. I came under heavy pressure @ work to do it again this november, but I don't really want to set a precedent and spend 1/12th of of life with a hairy top lip. My Mo = itchy. Grey. Yuck.

It sounds like a Stray Cats song that has had some football-related lyrics awkwardly worked into the tune, yet the googles tell me it's an original composition. It's just awful.
...And yet terribly catchy. It must sound amazing to hear a stadium full of fans singing "Heeeere we go!"
Right, so that's my earworm for the day.

Also fun has been the NFL play-offs where the Buzzsaw that is the Arizona Cardinals have cut their way through a number of teams who really should've beaten them and are now in the Superbowl.
Apparently their punt kicker is the first Australian to make it to the superbowl final (ex-AFL star).
At least the Steelers have given Pittsburgh something to cheer about. The Pittsburgh Penguins have become pretty average after going all the way to game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals last year. Sadly they're still playing better than my Anaheim Ducks.
Luckily, the only team playing worse than my ducks at the moment are Giovanni's Ottawa Senators, who lost 7 out of 8 games on a recent road trip while the World Juniors were in their home stadium.

It's not easy being a Spurs supporter at the best of times, but my god it's tough right now. Its was only two years ago when Spurs (should have) made the Champions League. Now I can really see them going to the Championship...

I have always thought that being a punter must be one of the easiest jobs in sport. Sure the whole team is rushing you, but as long as you can catch all you have to do is punt the ball as far as you can a couple of times a game. Job over!

Every NFL team has a fight song and most of them are really old. The Bengals' one is fun but my favorite is the San Diego Chargers'.

The guy punting the ball has to kick it as far as he can when they are stuck down their own end but usually they have to get the ball to stop before crossing the opposition touchdown line because if it does then the defending team gets to bring it back to the 20 yard line. They also have to get enough hangtime on the ball so that there defenders can get down and belt the hell out of the punt returner. It's usually pretty devastating if he gets a head of steam up.
All that said I reckon I could just about make an NFL 'punter'. They probably make a million a year and get tackled once a decade. A bloke in the Steelers game the otherday barely touched a defender as he came down after punting and was awarded a 15 yard penalty. It was a joke. Talk about protected species. Steve Price would be screwed with his knee breaking kick charge downs.

Also, on most teams, they're not the place kicker are they? So they don't even have to kick the ball when the pressure is really on - point scoring.

Wow looks like I was wrong, punters do get a lot of money (sort of). On closer inspection the guys earning $1M or more seem to be in the later years of their pro-rated contracts, you can tell because there is no signing bonus.

Punting and punt returns are my main qualm with Madden NFL 09. Like the amount of times I can get 10 - 20 yards on a return... Hm.
Punters do score sometimes though, who was it last year that actually performed a drop goal? The Steelers?

Good to see my educated guess was right. 32 place kickers? (P/K) in the league making more than a million US (looking at the total salary column). Even their reserve punters are around a million NZ a season.

The crazy ones who actually try to make tackles manage around 2-3 a season. Jeff Feagles at the Giants actively avoids any contact whatsoever and has made 11 tackles in the past 15 years.

One out of five punters suffers some kind of an injury each year. I'll take those odds and the million bucks thanks. ;)Now to put my two year old to bed. Probably far more hazardous to my health.

I can't find stats on how often they get tackled or even mention of it in articles (only looked for quarter of an hour though) but provided they take the ball cleanly they should not get near beign tackled. When they are in the motion of kicking they aren't allowed to be touched. So the only real way they can be is if the snap goes awol and then they recover it, or they drop the ball and recover it. In which case they are fucked but it doesn't happen all that often.

Tackles aren't an "official" stat so numbers on them are always woolly (ie. assisted tackles). But you could try looking up 4th down plays and where they were unsuccessful
