  • Graeme Edgeler,

Yes, clearly it was down to Hadyn to write about the Commonwealth Games, because I can't remember seeing any other coverage in the media lately?

I've realised the problem with that. It turns out we excluded half the population from participating and only sent female athletes. Well, according to the Stuff.co.nz online photo picker guy, anyways.

  • Lara,

I very occasionally watch a game of NZ vs. Australia, and feel like I've aged fifty years each time. And I am a 'I can't watch/not watch or I'll jinx them' person. It was tense enough just reading the updates....

  • Jarrod Baker,

When are you guys going to get over your obsession with tattooed chicks on roller skates wearing lingerie as outerwear?

My future wife plays roller derby for Richter City. To date she has yet to get a tattoo or wear her underwear on the outside (she does wear a short skirt when playing, but last time I checked so do netball players).

She also goes to derby practice five to six days per week. Almost like she's playing a real sport or something.

So, if none of us watch the NZ cricket team, will that help?

It is wrong of me to have found this photograph somewhat, er ... compelling, though?

As preperation for next year's world cup on the subcontinent, this tour of Bangladesh has been a disaster.

Media reports before the tour that New Zealand should be able to win all five games now look somewhat idiotic. No wait, it's not the reports, it's the team :(

Charlotte Harrison is 21: the rule of thumb suggests it's wrong for me to find it compelling. But you'll have to ask Fiona.

  • Peter Darlington,

Nice post Hadyn. I didn't watch the game but you've pretty much summed up life as a sports fan here. Anxious, angry, illogical, superstitious, pathetic and utterly brilliant.

    Cheers.

There's a 'roused' joke in there, but I am not touching that with a bargepole.

And you know, I rant on all the time about sexualising athletes (not that I'm accusing anyone of that, you understand), but I am pretty much ready to give that up as a lost cause. Especially as I am a hypocrite on the matter.

Won't Dan Vettori, Brendan McCullum and Jesse Rider save the cricket team?

    Oh.

  • Alan Macdougall,

It was at this point that I noticed John Campbell's tweets of the scores were about three minutes ahead of the television.

Sky's broadcast was ahead of Prime's by perhaps 5 minutes, as we found out when Rebecca's Mum called her to celebrate the result, a little prematurely for us...

Do they do that with other supposedly live free-to-air coverage?

There's an old tweet of Jo's I have favourited on this matter:

Really must stop objectifying women. Stupid hot women.

  • Emma Hart,

Actually, the main problem with happily objectifying NZ sportspeople is the likelihood that they'll turn up teaching your kids or related to someone you know.

  • Hadyn Green,

I used to have Bernice Mene on my list of "Five Celebrities I'm Allowed to Sleep With if the Opportunity Arises", until she was vetoed under the "Chances of Meeting a Famous New Zealander are Actually Pretty High" Act of 1998.

"Chances of Meeting a Famous New Zealander are Actually Pretty High" Act of 1998.

I had a similar issue with an ex and some Canterbury rugby players. Especially when he realised I knew a couple of them...

I'm loving being a kiwi living in Sydney today! Loving it! What a classy bunch of remarkable athletes the Ferns are - the Diamonds too for that matter.

Sorry, I don't know. It was a crap way to find out about it though.

I remember watching one of the games during the 1999 Rugby World Cup (which conveniently ran back to back on TV very nicely). At half time they had a highlights clip in an advert for their coverage which included a play which turned out to be from the second half of the game.

    Live coverage my butt.

  • Hadyn Green,

Is it that thing where they insert ads and it bumps the live feed back? Sort of reverse TiVo.

and speaking of ads, our household was rather annoyed that Prime went (almost) straight to ads at the end and we didn't get to see the Ferns celebrations

Didn't watch the game on Prime, but if there were ads, SKY's policy during CoGa has been to halt the broadcast and resume it when the ads were over.

(This is what made the opening ceremony take 4 1/2 hours and when India came out live, Prime was only up to Scotland)

I'm thinking that there were prob ads at the end of regular time/first half of OT?

This policy is being used pretty widely nowadays. V8 coverage gets the same treatment.
