Back in the day, before 20-20 cricket, many test fans started out as ODI fans. So it may follow that many 20-20 fans will become ODI fans will become test fans.

I love all three 'versions' of cricket - all appeal for different reasons (as you outlined).
Maybe as you get to know the personalities and get to understand more about the game through watching T20 you will start to enjoy Test matches and ODI too :-) -

So Hadyn having experienced and enjoyed 20/20 do you think you could enjoy ODIs or even Test matches?
By your measure I imagine a test match might require serious medical treatment if you really did enjoy it.
I'm curious because I'm not sure how the balance of cricket will shake out over the next couple of years.
It's clear 20/20s are very profitable.
But do they increase the number of people wanting to go to ODIs? Or alternatively do they replace ODIs.
Test cricket will survive simply because it's an utterly different game and experience.
But is there an audience for both 20/20 and ODIs?

The only ODI I've seen live was the recent one against the Windies in Wellington and that was boring. I'm planning on going on Friday to what could be a better game and to the test at the Basin, so at each point I can refine my opinion of the game.
Perhaps the most interesting thing is how worried cricket fans are that others will begin to enjoy 20/20.
If 20/20 "kills" anything it'll be mid-week ODIs (in my current opinion). At least the ones outside of the holidays.
20/20 can be played after 5pm so more people can make it after work and still not have a late night out (bring the kids!). It also makes TV rights easier to sell (hey, it might even make free-to-air)

I'd just like to say I've submitted my application for next vice-captain of the BLACKCAPS.
As per a drunken conversation halfway through the second last over:
'We wanna get it to at least 12 or less by the start of the last over. What I'd do if I was McCullum would be go for a couple of singles or as many 2's as possible off the first two balls. This opens everything up for us. We don't wanna try smack it straight away, 'cause if we don't get the boundaries we'll have no choice but to keep belting it. What we need to do is make them think we're gonna keep running, and we can win it that way. Then their fielders'll come in and we can hit a couple of boundaries. Then the Indians will be headless chickens, trying to hold on to the win, spreading the field here there and everywhere, before we hit a lofty almost-boundary to sprint the remaining runs.'Alas, while tactics are my strong point, skills are not. Also, at times, observation, as displayed by the confusion amongst my friends and I when we perceived Jesse to have taken a walk. Didn't know he'd been bowled until I saw the replays [also, see me vent my frustration re: Guptill.
As we left, we actually found ourselves in the middle of that group of Indians! They crept up on us, surrounded us, then began chanting! It was an easy way to get out of the stadium though.
Hat tip to this kid, wtf to this can of Woodstock in the toilets and man of the match to Jesse, 26 off 15, but bowled 24 balls and only cost 18 runs.

Not a chance. The whole T20 phenomenon (including the wars) is all about Pay TV.

I'd really like to see NZ Cricket take the Twenty20 comp and not use the 6 districts they use for the other cricket.
It would be cool if they could get 10 provinces / regions into a league, and then play 2-3 games / week. Comp could be done in a month just about, or a bit longer if you did home & away.
Anyway, im trying to figure out how I can go to the ODI on Friday, damned work might get in the way.

Which will be the death of ODIs. I can't see how you could fit ODIs into a tour and only have them on the weekend. To my mind, they only work as a series of matches. We may just have to face it that ODIs are dog tucker.
They may be on borrowed time already. That we only get to see a handful of 20-20s a season is likely to be due only to the fact that the ICC restricts the number that can be scheduled. If that restriction is dropped, after the next world cup say, 20-20s may start to seriously supplant ODIs.

Never mind.I've railed against this idea myself ever since the abomination that is 20-20 cricket appeared, but I have begun to accept the possibility. It is easier if you recall that not so long ago 50-over cricket was the abomination

I tend to think ODIs are still an abomination.
They are too short to develop the strategy and complexity that is test cricket.
They are too long to fit in an evening and too long to avoid 4 hours of boring forgone conclusion when one side stuffs up.
Over the years the rules for ODIs have improved and the game is more interesting and more often exciting.
But as far as I can see 20/20 does everything that ODIs do without the minuses.
A time where we play only tests and 20/20s seems pretty good to me.

So how about a tour where you play ODI's in the weekends, purely as day games, and 20/20's during the week? You could play a three match ODU series and a 6 match 20/20 series doing this (or 4 20/20's, whatever).

Any sport where the result becomes obvious early becomes dull. Look at the rugby world cup - did we really need to see the All Blacks beat Portugal. At the start of the game there was the chance, albeit small, that the game could be interesting. But once the AB's got a couple of tries ahead it was just a snore-fest.

LB is right about the pay TV thing, I was just hoping really.
20/20 may just swap around with ODIs, as Stuart says. It may just be more 20/20s are played than ODIs.
