  • Naly D,

You watch the All Blacks play rugby on Lancaster Park from Jade Stadium

    AMI Stadium.

  • Paul Williams,

As a sop to traditionalists at the time the naming rights were sold, they only sold the naming rights to the stadium, not the ground.

I didn't know that. I guess that's nice for the traditionalists. I don't want to seem ignorant or uninterested in history, I'm just wary of how various historic names have come about.

I laughed out loud when, on my first crossing of Arthur's Pass, I read the inscription on the cairn near the summit which quoted Arthur's father as saying Arther discovered the pass by following the local Maori.

  • Felix Marwick,

    @ Naly

Felix, are you the same F Marwick of Newstalk ZB?

    Yep, one and the same.

Right time to head to the Caketin to watch some cricket and get well and truly aerated by this damn northerly.

I just popped out, and the sun is trying to shine, so if the win dies down...

yep, no, good luck with that.

  • Felix Marwick,

Lancaster Park is, and will always be, potentially the coldest place on earth to watch cricket.

Back in 1993 (I think) I, and a few friends, went to watch a one dayer against Australia. The day dawned fine and sunny with a nor-wester keeping the temperature in the high 20's.

Half an hour into the game and there was a southerly change. The temperature plummeted to around five degrees. It was so cold all effects of alcohol were immediately negated. In the end we had to resor to going out and buying fish and chips - not to eat though - but to put the wrapped product under our t-shirts in a desperate bid to get warm.

Pure misery. My resounding memory of the event is the sight of the Aussie team all muffled and wrapped up in blankets, with just their noses sticking out, as they too attempted to keep out the Antarctic chill.

I'd be sympathetic, honestly I would, if it weren't so damned hot here. We've taken my youngest to the pool almost every day this week to get her some respite. The curtains are drawn in the living room to provide a little shade, fans are going constantly, ice blocks consumed by the kilo...the maximum today is 34, yesterday and the day previous it was 31... I can understand if that sounds momentarily pleasant but unless you get get cool, it's not. Overnight I suspect it didn't drop below mid-20s! A storm is forecast for this afternoon/evening, that'll save me from going nuts (or jumping on a plane to Wellington).

To be fair, they are off to a decent start getting the Windies to 35/3.

And @ Paul. I'll be there at the end of Feb. If it weren't so mean, I'd be wishing for it to stay hot until then.

32, according to our thermometer. Nor'west hair-dryer going full-bore. Kids desperate to go swimming. Parents desperate to watch cricket. We're off to the pool.

Gwad. I remember those nor-westers from my year+ in Chch. They're infrequent but.

No need Megan, it'll be as hot if not hotter in Feb!

  • Megan Wegan,

So, between a week or so in chch and a week in Sydney, I should get a summer, right?

  • Kyle Matthews,

Except in 20-20. (So long as we're splitting these particular hairs).

Not true now (not sure what the case was when they had bowloffs).

The match is 'tied', but the game is won after the super overs. Which makes no sense, but see the recent tie between NZ and WI as evidence.
