  OK, I like the idea that Hard News is part of the mainstream media, but is still really cool and a bit wild. I like that it's powerful and influential, but there's still a large percentage of the population who still have no idea what a blog is.

  Anyhow, I like J.G. Ballard's comment on waking up one morning and finding (to his great surprise) that Empire of the Sun was a mainstream success -- and whats more middle of the road that making the Booker shortlist back when it meant spit, and having Spielberg 'make a film of it? As far as he was concerned, he hadn't changed at all from the days when he was routinely cursed as the techno-perv of 'New Wave' SF. It was the 'mainstream' that finally got on his wavelength. :)
