Howlett?
North Island - right?
:-)
-
I must admit I thought that Howlett was Maori!

me three

I have to be honest and say I wouldn't know the answer to any of the questions either. But then I'm not saying I'll be helping the Pacific Island community either. In my area, Avondale, which has a big PI population (both my neighbors are large PI families), they don't really seem to either need or want any help, and are just people much like anywhere I've ever lived before. Curiously, it's the longest I've ever lived anywhere without having my car stolen or broken into. Remuera was shocking for that.

Who?
(Sorry, just a reminder that some of us are atheists about sport as wellas imaginary friends).
-
Howlett? Who wants a mayor mired in yesterday's men? Zac Guilford FTW!
-
Which reminds me of a comment my son made on the weekend. He told me to vote for Bob Simcock, "cause the other guy's too hairy, and I don't want a hairy mayor".
That might be why eight-year-olds aren't allowed to vote, but as an ad-man himself, the hairy one might have to rethink his posters.
I'm sure Chesterman's breaking out the Schick as I speak.
OTOH, it could be a good tag-line - Vote for the hairy mayor!
-
Would I vote for such a paragon, you ask?
S/he would be my FIRST CHOICE!

You mean you reject the existence of Doug Howlett?
Oh, and I actually did know he was Tongan.

Well, if you're voting for people on the basis of what they don't know, Mr Banks is surely your man then.
Sure you don't want to reconsider? ;-)

The age of prophets is not yet passed, Jeremy. I don't want to sound overdramatic, but from my intensive studies of the Bible, I think it's entirely possible that your son could be the Messiah reborn!
I direct you to Genesis 27:11-12:
And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, "Behold, my brother is an hairy man, but I am a smooth man. My father peradventure will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver; and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing."
It seems to me (both from my intensive studies of the Bible, and my many personal experiences with hair) that your son's words are no co-incidence.

merc,
Please tell me why the candidates are so thinking thick, like this guy is a surfer who shapes wooden boards and he gave me more ideas in one interview (sustainability, capitalism, employee relations, ocean ecology) than any of the candidates have, why is this? Are they saving their powder?

David, he's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy!
-
Tēnei te tangata pūhuruhuru!
-
I'm still going with the North Island :-)
-
I heard Banks on Morning Report, after spending quite a bit of time patronising the PI comunity ("I want to elevate them"), then go on to say he didn't want to patronise them. He really did come over very smarmy.

merc,
Should be gone by lunchtime, technically speaking.

I'd vote for Doug Howlett for mayor. Was that one of the questions?

Re: PPPs, in particular in schools.
Once again, we get policy that isn't policy. There are no specifics, just a very broad indication that National would like to consider some options that they say Labour don't. They don't specifically say what the options are, just that they hinge around the difference between public and private ownership of infrastructure. And they're only committing to consider the options, not to actually act on them.
Which leads immediately into a sad socialism vs capitalism debate, going over arguments that have been boringly familiar since the time of Karl Marx, and ending in ideological camps shouting obscenities at each other. This may convey an idea of difference, but practically we still have no idea if there is any.
National's current playbook of hoping to win on the strength of "capitalism is better than socialism", will not carry them through an election year. I'm not saying that is because socialism is better than capitalism. It's because only the ideological camps care. Everyone else doesn't want to have to guess what being 'more capitalist' means, they want specifics. Does it mean less tax? What cuts will be needed? Will schools be sold? Will schools be built? Where? How much will it cost?
And there are many areas of policy in which "capitalism vs socialism" has no real part to play anyway. Foreign policy, for instance. National appear to just be shadowing Labour there. Drug policy? Does either ism have a position on drugs? I don't know or care, I want to know what National are going to do.

Who the hell cares where Howlett's from, as long as he scores tries and has a good hairstyle.
-
I always thought of Howlett as 'Part European'. Am I wrong?

PPP
Got me thinking of Housing NZ & Maori Land.
Housing NZ supply good healthy homes (stop laughing) onto Maori land and so the need for tin shacks and perm Caravan parks are removed.
Confession
I bought my 1st copy of the Truth. Liked the point the victim was named and shamed but that cops have a special protection by the media. One rule for all dogs comes to mind.
But hell I felt like I shud hve smoked 40 a day and was missing a few tats but had too many teeth to be reading it. -
Russell, must confess I have never been in the position of voting for any Auckland candidates at all, so I've never worn a rosette for your Mr Banks. In fact it's amazing how little his reputation travels outside of your fair climes. Seems a prime example of Short Man Syndrome to me.
Always felt popular culture was overrated...it comes dangerously close to downmarket fashion fads, which no person of discernment ever gets enslaved by. (Is there such a thing as bas couture?)
I'll see your :-) and double it.

I always thought of Doug Howlett as a rugby player, his genealogical roots are of far more interest to him than me.
Unless they lose, in which case said roots are structural additions to a cursing streak.
