  • Russell Brown,

Plus I do feel that if you look at the history of censorship in NZ (useful resource) we had a period years ago when Penthouse was banned and publication was a difficult and easy to control process.

Thanks for that link, I'll have to have a look later. I know a bit about this, and it is interesting. In the early 60s, our Indecent Publications Act was introduced and put an end to a system in which any old jobsworth in Customs or wherever could ban books.

It was, at the time, modern and world-leading legislation, but it was eroded over the next decade or two by politicians (Muldoon was a particular offender) who bowed to the SPCS. Things weren't returned to a more consistent footing until the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act was passed in 1993.

Now governments have caught up and are using technology to reverse this process. I think that's a worry (and so do various others). I don't share your view that our government is intrinsically more sensible than Australia's and can be trusted on this.

It's just that all our governments' actions since a select committee threw out Trevor Rogers' Technology and Crimes Reform Bill in 1994 say that's not true, is all.

(In the time since, a total of one website has been classified objectionable under the Act as a result of complaints, in 1997 -- oddly enough, it was a misogynist gangsta site.)

If you're looking at actual evidence, there is just no comparison with the actions and philosophy of the government in Australia.

  • Rich Lock,

you can't tell me that there wasn't a masculinist backlash at work

Anyone who has more than a passing interst in this sort of stuff should seek out a copy of Susan Faludi's 'Backlash'.

She basically makes a reasonably convincing case that the status quo will always act to reassert itself, so when uppity wimminz try to get, for example, equal representation/pay in jobs, the (male) status quo will find a way to put them back where they came from.

The follow-up, 'Stiffed' is also well worth a read.

  • Ben McNicoll,

It finally came through. Nice. I wonder how much decent local underground rap is just hiding away on sites like zshare?

    Lots.

Including, as mentioned upthread, guys like Home Brew: http://homebrew.bandcamp.com/album/last-week

  • Heather Gaye,

RE: other "good" tv shows vs this vid. I was originally going to compare this vid (unfavourably) to Dexter until I realised that it's nothing like Dexter, except for the presence of a guy with a knife.

Those using the phrase "within context" are touching on what I think the difference is. What makes Dexter good isn't that it's got stabbings, but that it's a thought experiment. The premise is "within the context of our most fundamental legal and moral structure, if a man has these overpowering immoral desires and lacked the conscience to tether them, what environment and behaviour would be required for him to function as a normal human being, and what might be the outcome?". I find that supremely fascinating. Obviously the writer was going for some shock value - the book/show didn't become Big Love - & I wholeheartedly endorse a person's choice to avoid the show based on its depictions of violence, but I believe in the exploration of uncomfortable visceral and emotional terrain for the sake of challenging thought processes - particularly the ones that are so ingrained we don't even realise they're there.

The premise of the dirty sesh vid is to show someone getting murdered.

  • Stephen Judd,

I thought the premise of Dexter was "how can we subtly propagandise the notion that torture is a justifiable practise for the enforcement of justice and the discovery of truth to hipsters who are too smart to identify with Jack Bauer."

    /runs away.

  • Robbie Siataga,

It's the nastiest piece of shit I've ever seen (not that I seek out woman-hating garbage or bad examples of this musical style when there are so many good ones). Here’s my main concern though:

    just couldn't get the lolz

Real funny, Robbie. There’s a bigger story about gender, violence and ethnicity - and it is not arms-length for us here. Please remember that Robbie knew why this clip was controversial and deliberately chose to place it immediately after his words about the young female journalists:

i guess the final irony is, the anonymous 'victims' original intent for the story was to get an opinion from Bailey regarding his last incarceration, with the end result being they are now culpable in the charges that will probably see him getting jailed again.

where's the justice ?... maybe karma will sort them out.

Consider that last phrase. This is no accident, and quite in keeping with previous misogynist garbage about Kurariki. Sure there are a range of social and structural issues around gendered violence, justice and the place of young men, including polynesian young men.

But at a personal level I’m not sure why you haven’t been set right by some older men you respect, Robbie. You need to know it’s time to grow up. Real men don’t spread shit like this - it's not a game, and you're not some big-talking hero of the streets. Real people get hurt when attitudes like this are promoted as OK. They’re not...

    Working backwards...

Real people get hurt when attitudes like light sentences or anonymous shielding by peers are made out as OK. Real people don't get hurt watching vids or reading teh internet

hmmm...older men i respect. Yeah i'll give you that one, not many, if any. Palagi dad crawled into a bottle on the dpb when Samoan mum died young. None of us 5 kids were prepared for that. The uncles were either violent samoans or racist crackas. Hiphop was my first 'culture'.

Took me a while to find out Hiphop is a game, you play or you get played. You make the rules up as you go along. Real men do what they do outside the game.

Most of ya'll crack me the fuck down, but if any older men want to take me aside for some respect lessons them step up or step off and your credentials better be impeccable !

Whos up for a challenge ?..yeah i thought not. Like so many other things, lets just pass superficial judgment and put the rest in the the too hard basket and talk the shit out of it. This is mainstream media afterall, not the place to find role models and people to respect.

I've done my time talking in the streets and am thinking of getting down and dirty again and yeah i was some kind of hero. Now I'm as much a social commentator as i am a good father and i pretty much make my own rules there too. I'm more of a role model than most.

Karma in hiphop, as suggested in that link to the Kurariki piece is that a diss track be made towards the 2 journalist 'victims' and an accompanying video of 'entrapment by media' be made in much the sam way as the "brother" video highlighted the pre meditated murder of a tagger.

So is the world a safer place now the vids been pulled. Surely as a highlight to misogynist violence it sparks debate and leads to changing attitudes as much any feel good marketing campaign ?

Meanwhile aint a damn thing changed in the real world.

As for who can't get the lolz ? look in a mirror or let me hold my smoking black one up to you. One that reflects what you are, not what you see and maybe you'll see what's so funny about hypocrisy. This vid is just someone else holding that mirror up. Not pretty eh ?

By all means Sacha. Tell me your big story of gender, violence and ethnicity, and not at arms-length, for all us here. It may help...

The real question here is... censorship. Why did NZoA fund this tune if the lyrics were so jarring ? what does it say about artistic freedom and criteria for taxpayer funding ? Is it OK to walk/talk the darkside or does it all have to be flowers and honeybees blah blah blah and who earned the right to judge on our behalf ?

  • Chip Matthews,

Haven't seens Dexter so don't know the comparison. I generally dislike the video cause well, it's just disgusting and I don't want to be a part of it. And it makes up in my mind for the fact that he isn't that strong an MC.

And if I am correct I think that Robbie is a well known (possibly past) contributor to a local Hip Hop forum in which he also tried to be "provocative". I suspect he posted a clip like this to try and posit some fantastical expose on the "realities" of Hip Hop from an "industry insider"

No need for payment--universities should still be about the free dissemination of information!

I think the vice-chancellor is a frequent reader, Geoff :) No, really - warms the cockles to see someone upholding the Universities Act - critic and conscience and all that . . . .

  • Robbie Siataga,

I thought Dexter was the personification of americas right to pre emptive striking and the right to kill if it's in the greater good of their public/voters.

All the stereotypes are there. the scapegoating of the righteous black man. the copycat latin countries. the twisted and seductive british sponsor. the protagonist working within officaldom as though black ops.

    ooooh scary quotemarks...

Now now Chip, play nice and dont make this personal or stick to playing bass. It's one thing you're really good at but not in big fake bands that ripoff foreign sounds as much as dirty sesh or most other rappers.

BTW you heard scribe doing his weezy take on the latest j williams vid ?

it's not bad cos lil wayne is flavour of the month and he does a better em rip than sesh too.

  • Russell Brown,

    This just in:

    To Whom It May Concern,

We have decided to withdraw the Derty Sesh video(s) from circulation.

We apologies to anyone that may have been offended. That was certainly not our intention.

The aim of the video was never to promote anything negative towards women, and seeing as it has done so, and caused such a reaction, it is only right that MTC as a label respect the public's views.

    The rest is here.

  • Russell Brown,

    Story on Stuff:

Chief censor Bill Hastings told NZPA the Department of Internal Affairs had submitted the video to the Office of Film and Literature Classification.

Interested parties, including Move the Crowd Records, Rape Prevention Education, the Society for the Promotion of Community Standards and the Department of Internal Affairs, were yesterday invited to make comments on the video.

They would be given two to three weeks to make comments before they were considered by the Censor's Office and classified.

Mr Hastings said he had seen the video but had no comment to make on it.

He was unaware the video had been pulled from YouTube.

"That's interesting. Maybe they'll tell us the reasons why in their submissions to us."

  • Kyle Matthews,

Um, the DIA banned an issue of Critic for objectionable content. No video, no pictures, just text that said the wrong thing.

That was also half meaningless as Critic had been out for some time and was well distributed by the time it got banned. I'm not sure if they took it off their web site.

Most of ya'll crack me the fuck down, but if any older men want to take me aside for some respect lessons them step up or step off and your credentials better be impeccable !

    You're like 14 right?

    This just in

Now your theories on whether the whole thing was just a stunt to get his name out and all over the media, and then withdraw the video and make it a cult 'censored' classic?

Since Nov 2006 • 6243 posts Report Reply

  • Heather Gaye,

@Robbie pfff! Actually, the more I think about it the more the metaphor works, but not with Canadia. Also, series 4 is the best to date.

American shows have always been big into renegades fighting against The Establishment as a desirable archetype (and as America's perception of itself), but given Dexter's near-perpetual mental torment, fear of being discovered, & overtly questionable moral code (one he even questions himself) I think this show is further from that ideal than pretty much any other mainstream american personality-cult on TV.

  • Robbie Siataga,

    well played Kirk Harding...

King told the Sunday News he had wanted the video to cause controversy.

"My whole thing is to push the limit ... People in the hip-hop community [are saying] this is the best New Zealand hip-hop video to date."

"While it was never intended to upset people in this way, it obviously has" - Kirk Harding

he's like JKeyll to Rodney's hyde. Sesh pushes the boat out to deep water Key pulls it back in a little and the public is none the wiser but the real deal is done.

...now they'll be hoping the global hiphop boards get viral on it and i wouldn't be surprised if Mike King makes a splatter vid replacing women with pigs.

thanks everyone for playing your part. I for one feel safer that my kids are protected by the evil of music vids and hiphop...no really.

i dont think its gonna harm Sesh's "career" none, at least not as much as getting 'name supression" from getting your wang out for the fans to play with.

    NEXXXT...

so is NZoA gonna want veto power on questionable vids now and paybacks for non compliance or how about funding for people with lewd criminal convictions. Expect a change in criteria...yeah ?

good ol BS...always slow to the mark but a master at covering his arse while getting it licked at the same time.
