  • TracyMac,

Going back upthread a bit to drop a note - with the discussion about the range of views in feminism on porn/prostitution and the like, sorry to have "disappeared" on the discussion. 50 hour work week not terribly conducive to hanging out on intarwebs.

Jolisa, by referring to the Sex Wars, I was really talking about the conference in the early 80s where the debate about what was "acceptable" feminist sexuality came to a head. At least these days I don't get told I'm "male-identified" because I'm butch (and not trans) and like having sex with femme women. Kinkily, at times. The sex wars then weren't about policing men's sexuality (e.g. prostitution).

But you're right that there is this dichotomy between what others sneeringly scare-quote call "sex-positive feminists" and the ones who appear to conflate all non-mainstream or commercial sex with rank oppression ... and all the shades of grey in between. I'm tired of it too.

I very much believe that the powers-that-be should go after the exploitation of labour and dodgy business practices wherever they find them. I feel quite certain that as authorities back up their stated aims - that they will inspect strip clubs, restaurant kitchens, hotel cleaners etc etc etc for underage, illegal immigrant, improperly paid, unsafe workers, then a fuckload of industries will start pulling their socks up.

Personally, I think places like Hooters in the US are vile with their commodification of women's bodies in a non-ostensibly-sexual context. But if those women are paid properly and have decent working conditions, fine. I still feel I have the right to criticise the business, and the reasons why women might feel they have to work in such places, but I would not want to enact legislation to put those women out of work. And, if I learn that someone is in the habit of going to places like Hooters, great, a one-shot test to weed that kind of tool out of my social acquaintance.

  • Russell Brown,

    @Chris

then he will knock the guy out.
before he comes up his driveway, ie. anywhere.

No. That's a bizarre interpretation of his answer. It clearly meant he wouldn't even let the guy come up his driveway.

It sounds like the threats of violence are pretty one sided. Question is, is he setting a better example for his violence validating small children than a music video depicting violence?

In saying he'll protect his family -- in response to a stupid question positing "repercussions" for his criticism -- he might not have given the 100% politically correct answer. But, really, please don't compare it to a video featuring the consequence-free slaughter and dismemberment of women.

I've been very critical of Scribe on a similar topic (involving real violence committed by a friend of his on a friend of mine) in the past, but I'm not at all inclined to bag him for this.

  • chris,

You're right, Russell. I agree, and will steer well clear, it was a loaded question by the journalist concerned. I haven't seen the video, but I think you also hit another nail on the head with regard to my comparison to those banned films,

video featuring the consequence-free slaughter and dismemberment of women.

in that the idiom generally requires the wronged victim to enact brutal revenge.

  • Pharmachick,

    Try Hansard,
if anyone can be bothered searching it (is Hansard online these days and if yes, how far back is it archived?), then they will find out if there is any truth in the (and/or how often it may have been said by more than one person).

  • Pharmachick,

Okay sorry all, I actually replied to B Jones, 30 March 12:10 (page 1) ... errrrmm apologies: seems the "reply" function on this site is not quite how I'm used to it working (see: Huffington Post for an example of what I thought would happen). Newbie error!

    Actually while I'm here:

Russell, you're my: Hero Of The Week.

That King Junior - a.k.a. "Derty Sesh" - music video (that I *did* watch before it was taken down from YouTube) is vile, misogynist, triggering crap! And using Dexter/CSI/Grand Theft Auto as an excuse is baseless in the extreme. Scribe got it right too - that exiguous kid is also derivative and uncreative.

Which seems a good time to slip in the news that the forthcoming Major Public Address Revamp will introduce virtual threading. It'll be an optional view of the discussion.

    Oh, and welcome.

  • Steve Parks,

Yes, but he carried it on afterward with particular relish too.

He carried on killing Nazis. There are worse characters depicted in film, I think. One of Tarantino’s protagonists was German, and a strongly anti-Nazi German at that. I just find that hard to reconcile with the idea that Tarantino was only hiding behind the anti-Nazi theme and was really just being anti German.

    German was conflated with Nazi.

Except with the two examples we’ve mentioned already: Stiglitz (the Nazi-killing German), and Bridget von Hammersmark (the actress and traiter, another German who wasn’t a Nazi). There was a scene in chapter 2 (I think) where it was mentioned that the screening of the “Nation’s Pride” film would be moved to the smaller theatre run by Shossanna, in order to have a more elite Nazi high command audience.

... and the woman [von Hammersmark] undermined her own moral sanctity by killing the man after he had surrendered, taking advantage of the fact that he had just had a son and most likely wished to at least see him before he died. But again, that was OK because he was a German.

If you’re saying the audience are meant to find it OK for the character to be killed, wouldn’t that elicit sympathy with the character doing the killing, who also German? Anyway, that scene was classic Tarantino – he loves ‘little twists’ and melodramatic payoff. I’m sure Pitt’s character (Aldo Raine, thanks IMDb) would have stood by his word. But that deal was made on behalf of him and his men. The German traitor was free to show the soldier the same consideration he would have liked to show her.

Or they might even go so far as to say the it is liberties, not restrictions, that need to be justified.

They might, but it wouldn’t make much sense. There are virtually infinite liberties, so how do you argue from a position of “full restrictions”? Each prohibition would need to be argued for. After all, many prohibitions are contradictory (the Taleban and the conservative Christian right may share a general belief that liberty is over rated, but they have some different ideas about what should be prohibited). It seems to me a bit like saying that someone could establish God must exist because you don’t have an argument to prove he doesn’t.

in that the idiom generally requires the wronged victim to enact brutal revenge.

The difference is that the 'revenge' stories at least address questions around justice, justifiable actions, the purpose behind violence etc. The Last House on the Left features depictions of misogynist violence at least as nasty as those in King's video. It at least has something to say about the issue, though (well, arguably). King's video is pointless. Maybe no one will watch it and decide to kill a woman as portrayed in the video, but equally no one will watch it and reconsider their treatment of women either. He's "holding a mirror to society"? Lame.

But still, it is likely that he thinks he's being 'edgy' and pushing the limits, or what have you. He may not be sexist. Depicting something doesn't mean you approve of it. He's being artistically puerile (at least in this case) but that isn't a crime.

For the record, I don't think any of those works (King's video, or the movies Chris mentioned) should be banned.

  • Robbie Siataga,

    artistic statements

Sexist hate videos are nothing to be proud of, gangsta boy.

Weak cowardly men take on those they see as weaker - surprise, it's women, children, ethnic minorities and migrants, disabled people, LGBT, etc.

Grow the fuck up, show some real balls.

haha troll alert... you know theres no way you'd say that to me in real life eh. so who needs to grow up son ?

if i'd made that vid i 'd be proud of the production values, if i'd made the tune i wouldn't have put it out and if i ran the record label i'd question whether this kid has the goods to deliver long term.

as for scribes comment. it wasn't that long ago when all hiphop artists presented a united public front in supporting each other regardless of merit. I think he should have supported sesh in that respect and said 'good for him if thats how he wants to portay himself but thats not me' and left it at that cos really he's in no position to claim originality on anything.

but given that he said his comments were taken out of context i doubt he'll make the same mistake again.

  • Sacha,

Hah. In real life, I'd have nothing to say because you lack the balls to be trotting this shit out in the first place where there are consequences beyond a few words.

In news for adults, Kirk Harding's lengthy response.
Summary - media made it up, we got it wrong, move along.

Sacha...If you look like a duck, quack like a duck then i'mma call you a duck and a lame one at that...

I'd have nothing to say because you lack the balls to be trotting this shit out in the first place where there are consequences beyond a few words.

Maybe in a past life when i created aliases to suit an agenda but in using my family name i'm honour bound to stand by what i say...

...in real life, you wouldn't step to me and front like you know me then make with the lame insults cos i think you're a coward.

one day we'll probably meet and i will get up in your face and ask if you've got anything to say. I hope you remember to pack your balls.

please don't read a threat into that, i just hope you man up.

Media watchdog, Russell Brown got angry at us on his blog (Public Address), then gave me props for the very first time (ummm gee thanks Russell) before proceeding to hurl abuse at us without checking any facts. You see, Russell is disappointed in me, so disappointed that he has essentially written off my 24 years supporting NZ music because of one mistake. Huh? Really?

Good on Kirk for coming out swinging now, better late than never. Stiil should have let the vid ride though and fuck the haters.

so who watches the watchers ?...i do for one !

Someone *really* doesnt know how to read responses. Or how others read his responses. Or appreciate that his responses are aggressive and selfserving provocations.

Oh, well. Growing up can take a while, but I dont think I can be bothered watching this poster grow up. Will Take Some Time-

oh right, like its OK for him to call me gangster boy, tell me to grow up and say i lack the balls to 'trot what shit out' exactly ?

so i call him a coward cos i figure he wouldn't say it to my face but i'm prepared in the best polynesian tradition of "kanohi te kanohi" to give him the opportunity.

Theres no threat in what i posted but it seems theres a lot of you who don't know how to read hiphop responses. It's a challenge to see if he's man enough to tell me to grow up and get some balls in real life.

hell i might even respect him if he did but i'm hardly likely to resort to violence nor is it my style to stalk him. Thats not how i role.

Hah. In real life, I'd have nothing to say because you lack the balls to be trotting this shit out in the first place where there are consequences beyond a few words.

and what exactly is that supposed to mean ?

Fact is, he's admitted he wouldn't say anything to me in real life but you're giving him the OK to keep saying shit in here. I haven't done anything wrong to aplogise for but if you pull Sacha up and force him to apologise, i will too.

    fair enough ?
