  • andin,

    got quite lively.

It almost got positively noisy. A mini Daily Show almost, with the audience audibly guffawing at a ministerial clanger.

and the minister deserves credit for opting to join the panel after the interview

What he didnt have a ministerial car waiting to whisk him off to another important event. Anyway I think he quite enjoyed pretending to listen to academics.

The key question is whether it's possible to have public broadcasting without a public broadcaster, and National's policy hasn't been thought through in that respect.

    One could say that.

but you're asking commercial broadcasters to screen non-commercial programmes. The issue isn't the cost making the programme: it's the opportunity cost of showing it in a commercial timeslot.

Rather than pander to a lowest common denominator, note I said a

Now what do we all have in common apart from being in the same species... hmm oh thats right very little.

Good show , I wondered if you were tempted to get out a whip at any stage to get those unruly buggers back in line.

  • Geoff Lealand,

It was a good show and an overdue debate. Nevertheless I thought there was too much flowing around--comments drowned out, statements uncompleted--and bit too much maleness, generally. It would have worked better with 3 people and bit more bossiness from Russell, I reckon. But nice to see fellow academics getting some space in air.

Russell, when is Nintendo DSi available in NZ and is it worth the wait? My daughter is dead keen for one.

  • Ben Gracewood,

Luke: the DSi is available on the 2nd of April. I'm not much of a portable gamer, but it is a fun little console. I think the tweenie girl market is well catered for with the music and crazy photos.

Russell: Leo was brilliant, basically took the questions out of my mouth. I was keen to know if the Nintendo App Store would be lassez-faire (highly unlikely given Nintendo's history).

  • Paul Williams,

But wait! There's more! If you're in Sydney this weekend -- would you like to attend the final of the Women's World Cup of cricket, in which the White Ferns will surely conquer England? PA regular Paul Williams has some free tickets for his fellow readers. You'll need to email him asap at siesta@internode.on.net and he'll sort you out.

PASers, it'd be great if the White Ferns had a parochial home crowd advantage on Sunday so encourage your Sydney-resident mates to pick up tickets and get along to the game. North Sydney oval is a really charming ground, easily accessible by public transport and the weather's going to be great... the set up is also fantastic for kids and families.

  • Luke Williamson,

Thanks a mill Ben. My tweenie will be delighted - been saving for months. Personally, I can't bear the thought of another screen (or two) in the house but have to loosen the reins some time.
That is a way-funky version of RiverDeep by the way.

How about media 7 do a panel discussion:

Should "Hard News" change its name to something that ore reflects its content these days? To something like "Introspective navel gazing?"

Because it has become as dull as dishwater.

  • Tom Semmens,

Danielle, I have no problem with the content. It is just, (if I may digress) as I've said dozens of times on here and elsewhere, I find reality TV excruciatingly boring because I find the personal trivia of foolish people of no interest. I am not lumping Russell Brown in with the true horrors of NZ's Next Top Model, but it is for the reasons I just don't find his life as interesting as he does. Hell, NO ONE finds anyone's life as interesting as they do. So therefore I have a problem with the blog being called "Hard News" when it is clearly neither hard nor news. Just rename it "Fireside with Russell" or some such.

Hard News has become like all those big company record executives it likes to criticise - a whole lot of slightly past it, backslapping insiders who are resting on their laurels and when criticised indignantly point to their record, not their current performance. If your heart is no longer in something it is better to get out and do what you are now interested in, than hang onto until Hard News becomes like a once-fine pub that has declined into decrepitude.

I know it is just anecdote, but the rumblings of discontent from others I know who used to be hardly able to wait for new posts on Hard News indicates I am not alone.

Heh, I hope you feel a bit better now that's out of your system Tom.

Hard News has always been a mix of the personal, cultural and political. I can't really see what's changed except maybe you stopped enjoying it?

Tom, I've been writing something called Hard News for nearly 18 years, and I'm sure people have, for most of that time, gotten pissy about it being not as good as it used to be, or something.

In one sense, I suppose it's gratifying that people feel such a sense of ownership, but it's my blog. I'm proud of what we're doing with the TV show and I enjoy having people discuss the issues it raises here -- and I'm massively proud of what my autistic son is doing right now.

If that's "navel gazing" to you, fine, don't read it. But don't insult the rest of the community here, and please don't tell me my heart isn't in it.

If I had a dollar for everyone who told me after the recording that Coleman reminded them of Key, I'd have ... five dollars.
