  • Rich of Observationz,

    Is I first!

I just think these discussion boards (especially ones that require registration) are a bit like mouthing off in the pub or building site. Maybe the old saying about sticks and stones should make a comeback?

  • JP Hansen,

Maybe you need to refer to the nightline guy as David Farrar to even up the score.

  • Rogan Polkinghorne,

I think it's hilarious Yulia even rated a mention on either of these 2 boards, let alone sparking a flame war/police complaint!

  • Tom Semmens,

Given the fate of Joel Hayward, I think Mr. Clydesdale's should fall on his knees and thank God he still has job, especially as his work is more explicitly political than Mr. Hayward's work.

  • Neil Graham,

The Yulia story was so strange. From the (directed? dear god, I hope so) body language of the couple to the reporter seemingly about to explode at the end.

and dude, eyebrow trim. Especially if you going to do the backlit extreme closeup.

Couldn't agree more. There's too much noise in the Clydesdale story. The issue is simple. He did shoddy work, didn't get it peer reviewed and then whored it to the media. He's bloody lucky to still have a job. I can't think of many employers, public or private, who'd tolerate this (and the "PC" counter-narrative is complete BS).

  • Shep Cheyenne,

Tom -I'm not sure his career is secure, it seems to read like a bit of a clanger

His track record on Chinese & Indian immigrants is rather telling.

Looks like Massey is really interested in immigration, so Clydesdale might be trying to be relevant in the context of Massey?

  • lotech,

Just so you know - the majority of the Ondemands version of Media7's sound is only working on the right channel. Sometimes the intro music is in stereo.
Get your TVNZ web monkeys on to that.
While your at it get them to make the video window a bit bigger - my eyes are sore from looking at a postage stamp sized window.

All of that is out of your hands I know. Thought I should mention it though. Keep up the good work.

  • Paul Litterick,

Who are these ridiculous people? Pop star Yulia and her husband slash manager Glyn MacLean should be ignored; they are ghastly.

Whilst we are at it, we should ignore Clydesdale as well. He is another obvious self-promoter. If he has done some serious research, he should try to get it published in an academic journal, not send out press releases.

    Damn them all.

  • Geoff Lealand,

Don't damn us all, for Clydesdale (a work horse?) is the kind of faux academic who gives the rest of us a bad name. My last experience of peer reviewing involved six 'blind' appraisals. extensive rewrites, rejection--then another round of peer reviewing for the journal that did publish it.

  • Morgan Nichol,

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that, while offensive, the 'spike her drink' joke is quite funny. (See, adults know that offensive, funny, and clever aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.)

Of course, given that I've never heard of either of those sites - ever - I haven't read any of the other comments, some of which may have been less funny, and more scary (though I doubt it, we've all seen threads like this, they're the childish outcome of people sitting alone in their bedroom losing track of the fact that they're talking to and about real people - not some magical pixie that lives in their computer).

What I'm more impressed by than anything else is how incredibly creepy the couple comes off as in the video - si it evidence of the segment producer's skill, or is the *ahem* simpler answer the correct one.

I really think they should crawl back under their horrible little rock, and before coming out again get a little media training. That elevator kiss was worse than anything we saw between Charles and Di.

There's an old saying: don't feed the troll. These people served up a fucking buffet.

  • Paul Litterick,

No, you mistake me. I am myself a humble toiler in the groves of academe. By "them all," I meant the pop star, the manager slash husband and the Clydesdale.

Paul: thanks. No offence taken! I will join you in the wholesale damning of this evil trio. A horse and two donkeys?

  • Shep Cheyenne,

Geoff - faux academic? or is it a matter that the mail order college is faux academia?

  • Kracklite,

    meh. julia is what, "pop-classical"?

    Popsical?

Sweet and syrupy, but leaves you feeling cold and sticky afterwards?

    faux academic?

Given the way that McMassey treats its real academics (ask Peter Cullen or the AUS), I'm not surprised that parasites who go through the motions and promote themselves first can do just as well or better than the real thing.

    Bitter, moi? Yes.

  • Paul Williams,

Peter Cullen hey; smart, smart lawyer. Does he do work for AUS? He was scorned by some in the unions as he did some work for employers - Telecom perhaps? I also used to have a bit to do with him through the NZUSA network plus he also advised my wife who was appallingly badly treated by a government agency (so appallingly badly treated in fact that the Secretary - I wish I could name him because he was/is a class act but I'll resist - actively encouraged her to lodge a claim).

  • Daniel H,

Hey, long time PunkAs user here.
I just wanted to clarify Matt (the forum administrator's) stance.
It should be noted that nothing on PunkAs was defamatory, maybe slightly inappropriate, but this is a website that has talked about "porking" Helen Clark to become the hero of the heterosexual world.
(Helen is yet to lay charges)

The comments were in jest, and clearly opinions and not plans of action, nobody with any sense would have ever taken them as anything else.

That said, if Glyn/Yulia had simply contacted Matt or another moderator the thread would have been taken down. Taking it to the police was excessive and vindictive. Matt tries to have a relaxed moderating style, and as nothing illegal was posted (merely insulting/explicit, neither of which are completely unwarranted..) he wouldn't take pre-emptive action just in case someone might be offended. It is a site where freedom of speech is valued, but threads will go if it is asked for.

In the end, criminal nuisance charges are being levelled at a 17 year old kid for making a prank call. They were never in any danger, like they would claim. They brought the prank calling on themselves by being insulting, self-centred, self-important twats, and claiming he could ruin our futures in "the industry" for mocking him/his wife.

Interestingly, the only people that seem to have made actually defamatory remarks are Glyn/Yulia, especially when claiming that their is actual intent behind any of the comments. There are other rumours going around about them as well, which would suggest they were actually trying to ruin this kids life.

Also if you do want to see how amusing these people are, search on trademe for Yulia the singer.

  • Kracklite,

Does he do work for AUS?

No, the AUS have their own employment lawyer, but it's always reassuring to have a Plan B just in case. I have a former colleague who said that he never really understood Dilbert until he started working for Massey. That sort of thing is funny to read, but not in the least bit funny to live. Considering what does pass for research from favoured cronies in that environment, the case of Clydesdale surprises me not at all.

Feel free to continue to express frankly any opinions you may have formed about Mr Clydesdale's work. But I'd be obliged if he wasn't defamed.

  • Shep Cheyenne,

    Clydesdales last effort:
"Economic decline and the failure of Chinese Entreperneurs"

    http://mises.org/journals/qjae/pdf/qjae10_2_5.pdf

Chinese Treaties in the wake of the Opium Wars are known as Unequal Treaties, which I thought might have been worth a mention. Instead Clydesdale states it's the incompatable values of the Chinese, not the unequal treaties that create their "entrepeneurial failure".

So Western Values are therefore better than Chinese Values, not the unequal treaties, drugs & guns used to stupify and passify the biggest economy the world has ever seen.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unequal_Treaties

It was published last year & and has rough average of 30yr old refferences, the newest is 9 yrs old.

  • Shep Cheyenne,

The DomPost on stuff have quoted that "some are critical, some supportive and some are neutral".

Supportive of what exactly, Clydedale himself, academic freedom, or his findings?
    No-one has supported his findings.

Clydesdale did have it peer reviewed and publicised/publish inspite of negitive peer review, that is quite astonishing.
