  • Graeme Edgeler,

Um, yes... Isn't a select committee stage meant to work on "faults' in the legislation under consideration? Sorry for being a bitch on a Friday avo, but its not as if Mallard's had any problem voting to advance poorly drafted legislation before.

Minor errors, sure, but we've seen what happens when incredibly inept legislation gets to select committee - the entire debate gets side-tracked, and while you're fixing all the major problems, the more minor - but still important - problems go un-noticed and unfixed.

I did first point out the contrast between the actions in government and those in opposition, but personally, I much prefer that he's come out with this argument now, then not at all.

When Labour next gets into government I like the idea of being able to point to this and asking for consistency. It certainly beats the analogy we're going through here: you didn't support good legislative practice while in Government, why do you insist upon it now? Doesn't really strike me as a line of attack I want to be running.

Well, I was more wondering whether Mallard's deep concern for tightly-drafted legislation was more a flag of convenience under which to (as Russell put it) "avoid talking about the issue."

70% heritable is much higher than I thought.

The accepted wisdom was about 25%.

What do you guys mean exactly by x% heritable?

Eminently possible; but I don't care why he came 'round, just that he has. And in his next stint in government, I'm going to hold him to it.

Which is why, possibly, our eminent Representatives don't hang around here much. It must be a bugger to always be on the record and permalinked.

  • nz native,

No surprise that the house of liars voted by an overwhelming margin to not even investigate the possible medical uses of cannabis.

Dr Johnathon 'fingers' Coleman ( he gave the fingers to sick cannabis users ) was quoted in the newspaper as saying the last thing NZ needed was more drugs.

.............. printed on the same day in the same paper was an article reporting how the govt had voted against a bill looking to restrict advertising for the the drug alcohol ........

The natianals have always been against cannabis users.

Welcome to the new nats ..................... same as the old nats

  • Kong,

nz native, don't get too bitter. On the bright side, anyone wanting to use existing marijuana for pain relief will also get to enjoy the fun of being baked, instead of having to put up with some lame medical marijuana, which by some kind of sick science will probably have the fun carefully extracted before it could ever pass wowser law. It would be like taking a shower with a raincoat on.

Seriously, it's not like there aren't any other options for pain relief. I don't get the big kerfuffle about medical marijuana, other than that, yes, banning it is lame. On the scale of lamest things done by parliament since 1900, it probably ranks about 600th. That's really the cleverness of the war on drugs, that it can be done in 10,000 steps, each lamer than the last, and you can't really put your finger on exactly when it got unbearably pathetic. The fact that it is a losing battle, that drug usage continues unabated, and that new ones are coming out all the time, doesn't stop some people thinking that a titanic wall of cretinous rules against everything isn't still a mighty thing to have.

  • nz native,

I guess I am bitter Kong, perhaps that is because I actually do know some sick medicinal cannabis users.

I've seen people go through chemo.

I've seen them die from cancer.

I think getting 'baked' is very secondary to the actual symptoms of disease which can be alleviated by the use of cannabis for the medical user.

And although it may be fun to be baked, when you are ill its no bloody fun at all to buy the medicine that works best for you from a black market with irregular supply, vastly fluctuating quality of medicine, inflated price, rip-offs and possible police attention/criminal conviction.

Maybe you'll find out what medicinal cannabis is all about if you should get very sick.

And then you'll be a sick criminal .

  • Kong,

native, I imagine fluctuating supply is really the main concern there? Has anyone you know ever actually been busted who was using dope medicinally? But sure, it's stink that they even could be.

As for the cost, it's really not that dear. Inflated compared to what? What is the value of pain?

  • nz native,

R A Francis I have read the MacDoctors views before and he is to medicine what MacDonalds is to food .............

His blog should be called blue-blooded-quack , the guy ( I presume he's male ) talks crap and seems to believe reefer maddness myths .................. he also seems to think piss is safer than cannabis which really shows the depths of his bias and ignorance. No prizes for guessing what drug the doctor takes .............

In fact I wouldn't see that doctor to get a boil lanced from YOUR nut sack Francis ................ he's another 'Fingers' doctor.....

Kong, Fluctuating quality would be as greater problem as supply, different strains have totally different cannabaloid profiles which makes them suited for different medical uses ................. these uses can vary from appetite stimulation, pain relief, insommnia etc etc. Their is more variation in cannabis breeds than dog breeds so one plant/strain can be totally different from another.

As for the cost .................. how much money do you think sick people on a benefit have to spare ??????????????.

The answer is usually NONE, Black market prices are indeed a cause of suffering to some.

You are right that is unusual for a medicinall user to get busted .................. unless they grow their own.

Anway I expected no change or compassion in our cannabis laws from the house of liars.

So therefore I am no more bitter towards the pack of arseholes than I was the day before or the day before that ...... .

I've been a 'cannabis criminal ' for a long time.

But I know who the real real crims and scum are.

They go under the lable of the Natianals and Labor.

  • 3410,

I've been a 'cannabis criminal ' for a long time.

Me too. I made sure to get extra toasted this weekend in tribute to the above-mentioned hypocrisy, and had a very nice time listening to the Jackson Five, Zeppelin, Small Faces, France Gall, Morricone, Amedeo Tommasi, Mario Molino, Mink Deville, The Troggs, Velvets, Ramones, Danzig, Kraftwerk, Neil Young, Iggy Pop & James Williamson, Dwight Twilley, Jean Michel Jarre, and so on.

I've been an off-and-on toker for about 20 years. I still enjoy it, and I'll decide what's good for me. As with most here, I'm hardly surprised by last week's vote but 'whatever.' I try not to care about the petty morals of old men.

If I ever get busted, I forsee a successful defence, on Bill of Rights grounds. :)

  • Kong,

I'm also a toker from way back, started when I was pretty young, actually. I think I was 11 when I first got high. Not a particularly heavy user, usually socially, or if I'm bored of a weekend-night. I don't really feel particularly saddened by the failure to consider medical marijuana this week - it's failed to be considered my entire life.
