  • Ben Gracewood,

KiwiFoo is just brilliant. I can feel the enthusiasm and cognition bubbling over from the event through the 'tubes (via Twitter and blogs), and I wasn't even there!

This is why New Zealand isn't fucked. Great work Nat, Russell, and everyone involved.

  • Matthew Poole,

On s92, how can I set my gravatar to be black?

  • Russell Brown,

You'll notice that my gravatar has changed. It's black.

This is part of a mass protest about the impending coming into force of Section 92(A) of the Copyright Act, which requires ISPs (that definition is very wide indeed) to show plans to terminate the internet access of any customers accused of copyright infringement.

You can change yours by going to Gravatar and logging in.

To get a black gravatar image, you can right-click and download this file.

Don't fret about changing it. Your existing image will stay on Gravatar and you can change back later. Also, don't fret if Gravatar asks you for a nickname. You'll get that message if you haven't logged in since they added a nickname field to registration. Just think of a name -- it won't affect the name that appears as part of your PA System registration.

It appears that a reasonable approach on the part of the copyright lobby is not on the cards.

  • Russell Brown,

Oh, and if you don't see your sexy black new gravatar, you'll want to empty your browser cache and try again.

  • Mark Harris,

Hmmm, not seeing a change here on your gravatar, Russ. Still the orange microphone to me

Still the orange microphone to me

Oh, I thought that was his chin...

Foo, great. Many many thanks to the organisers. My only problem was that I was (on Friday at least) a bit too frazzled/late to communicate. Met some of the PA writers I had not met before and was barely able to string a sentence together.

Also got to meet kotare, a blogger I have admired for some time.

  • Mark Harris,

Yeah, fine on Safari. I wonder what's up with Camino?

Hmmm, just clicked on Russ's gravatar link in Safari to see if that worked, and now all the gravatars are back to the previous images! WTF?

  • 3410,

I'm assuming this protest is aimed at MPs. If so, I really have to wonder how many of them even know what a gravatar is, let alone regularly empty their cache.

  • Mark Harris,

It works on first opening, but refreshing the page seems to reset. I've even tried it on WinXP with IE6 (that I haven't used before so no cache) very very strange...

  • Simon Pound,

ummmmmmmmm, seeing that the powers that be have shown that they absolutely don't care what anyone else thinks by ramming this through against all reasonable protest I wonder if the black avatar approach isn't, ummm, going to be totally and absolutley ignored as well.

And perhaps laughed at by fat guys with white cats on their laps.

How about some online civil disobedience. Like an updated sit-in.

Choose a series of targets then run sit-ins against them to draw attention to the unjust and unreasonable draconian law.

A denial of service attack is a pretty good updated sit-in.

  • Don Christie,

S92 - I know more is coming. But we have been told all along by MED that a code of practice will be agreed between ISPs and the recording industry and that this is an important part of how the legislation will be applied in practice. Now it looks like there will be no CoP agreed to by RIANZ.

So, are we left was an ass?

And, is anyone else thinking maybe MED need to be held to account?

Uh? The link to the black gravatar file works fine for me.

    Is something else broken?

Update: Oh. Duh. The link to Gravatar was broken. Fixed now.

  • Mark Harris,

Weird. The only thread I've been getting it to stick on is the copyright thread

Does PA have a cache of its own that might be affecting this?

  • Sacha,

Don, don't worry you weren't alone - I just accepted after a while that there were far too many interesting and brilliant folk to keep up with in such a short time. Great to put faces to names, including yours, but now I am knackered.

I can verify the gleam in Emma's eyes after her killfest (and the red wine completed the look). Fantastic to spend time with her and others after so long online. Several of us had a great little aspie coalition going by the second night, and the whisky sharing was most enjoyable.

I am still overflowing with gratitude at being able to meet with influential and amazing people in such a low key and friendly space. As organisers, Russell, Nat and Jenine are taonga, and so are the attendees. The audience for the debate voted overwhelmingly in favour of "not fucked", by the way, and I came away with considerable hope.

No the ling to gravatar.com comes up with http:// www. publicaddress. net/system/Gravatar (I put spaces in so it will display as text) and gives a 404

Somehow, i think getting ISPs to shut off the internet for a day would be more effective.

Aha! PA does have an edit button. It's just that Russell refuses to let us use it and saves it for himself (thinks evil thoughts)
