There's some good fan-made videos for Godspeed You Black Emperor, who often seemed like a soundtrack in search of a movie. This is one of the better ones. What a great band they were ...

Cos there's no 70s era footage of Big Star:
The pointless interview after the song is entertaining in its own way too.

That song is just insanely good. Anyone only familiar with the Paul Young remake (shudder) owes it to themselves to hear it. Everything about it - vocals, arrangements, horns, strings - is perfect. And those little chimes... sigh.
I went to visit the Hi Records building in Memphis. It was unprepossessing from the outside. Judge, book, cover, etc.

By some distance their most infamous TV appearance. Unbeknown to anyone, Keith Moon had bribed a stage-hand with alcohol to pack his bass drum with a surfeit of explosives. As the band ended My Generation with their trademark stage-destruction, the cameras were momentarily blinded by the blast. As the smoke cleared, Moon lay on the floor, his arm sliced open by cymbal shrapnel, Townshend's hair was on fire and, it is said, his hearing damaged for ever. Waiting in the studio's wings, Bette Davis fainted in Mickey Rooney's arms. Naturally, the band was banned from further US shows.

Actually, I think the thing that blew my mind was Patti Smith's 'Because the Night' on Casey Kasem's American Top 40, to which I would listen every weekend. It was a serious what the fuck was that? moment.
Meanwhile, in England, a callow youth called Paul Litterick turned on the weekly Rock show on BBC2 and saw The Patti Smith Group for the first time.
Soon his Emmerson, Lake and Palmer records would be history.

I'd like to share with all of you one of the most terrifyingly perky dance routines ever put on film
Wow - stunning. West Side STory has a lot to answer for.
Meanwhile, here's one that's just terrifying. (can't resist).

Not that I was a dad at the time, but my first music (which, I'll be proud to show the grandkids on VINYL) was purchased with an HMV $15 voucher I received for my 13th birthday. For $12 I got the album featuring this:
And needing to spend the last $3, made the mistake of buying this 12" single:

Hah! I used to love Home By the Sea.

Andrew, if you wanted, I could sell you a very slightly used 12" single... In fact I think it's still at my parents house in Wellington.
