Is anyone else a bit weirded out by the new "A Sign of Hope" banner ads that have popped up recently on PA System?
It appears to be promoting the website of some fruity new age group who believe some star is signalling the return of "the World Teacher". And as far as I can tell, it is not a pisstake.
That's a big WTF from me too... at the least it seems like very poor identification of target audience (on the advertisers part).

Also, very interested in reading the comments on web stats above, thanks Stephen/Mark/Jason et al.
Ta. One thing I should have said: some services can figure out the referring page from cookies, IF the referring page uses the same service. This is how ad companies track you from site to site, and why Firefox has "block 3rd party cookies" option.
Apropos the Maitreya stuff -- their money's as good as anyone elses. And they might even be correct in assuming that their target market is over-educated lefties.

Perhaps their target market is actually people who will click through, look at it, then tweet about with "WTF is this?!" and then engage in some lolz with their friends about its absurdity.

Curiously, the same reaction I get when the XT network is advertised.

Re the Maitreya stuff, I wondered how long it would take for someone to refer to it. I was surprised to see the banner there the other day as it didn't seem to fit the XT network type ads usually advertised in that space. But, I for one, am happy to have something there for a change that is advertising an optimistic outlook for the future and, what's more, doesn't involve buying stuff.
And considering the numbers of thread pages devoted to various conspiracies on other topics (such as the sounds on a few seconds of 15 year old tape for example), promoting another untested theory doesn't seem too out of place.

That ad doesn't bother me, just don't start on body-part enhancements, weight loss, or Dancing with the Dorks.

"Dancing with the Dorks" - love it.

You have to click through to one of the sites linked from the landing page to get to the seriously WTF material.
