Don't worry, with the rise of Fascism in Italy they'll be doing that in no time, and blaming the gypsies.
Easy there, mate.

Tom tends to get exponentially more offensive after the All Blacks lose, Giovanni. :)

by the early 1990s there were a few well-recognisable places that are still there
In the early 1990s, my man and I used to frequent Expressoholic (sp?), for the coffee, the cake, and the pinball machine. It was on Willis St then.

One simply does not take coffee with one's servants. I despair of how standards have slipped in the Colonies.

Anyone had a cup of Civet coffee that goes for 50 pounds a cup in London?
When visiting Simon in Bali we have Kopi Bubuk which you just add to a cup with hot water and stir, simplistic, tasty and addictive! -
Fuck me - I've been shut down as a "spam blog". It's a false positive, brought about by my pernicious habit of linking to content on news sites, but it means I can't post until some dumbarse in America actually looks at the blog and manually unlocks it. Which given US standards of "customer service", could never happen.
If I'm not unlocked in 20 days, I get deleted. Marvellous.
Fscking false positives.

There was actually, I think the Havana boys opened Midnight Espresso in 1988 or 89, Wellie coffee culture took off very quickly from there.
In Auckland, DKD opened in 1985, I think. There were a few other places serving espresso (what was the health-food plae in Lorne St?), but it's generally agreed that you can trace the Auckland cafe culture from there.
But it is probably true to say that the cafe thing really took off from about 1991. Urbi et Orbi (the precursor to Brazil) opened that year in K Road, and it was all about the coffee.
I was friends with the Incubator Studio guys at the time, and it wasn't entirely untrue that they put as much effort into the coffee (made with Atomic stovetops bought at auctions) as they did their sound engineering.

Giz a yell if it looks like it's not quickly resolving. I might know someone who knows someone.
But I'm seeing No Right Turn displaying right now. Is it that they've disabled your Blogger login?

IS,
I know how you feel.
We were hacked 3 weeks ago, but removed the offending scripts in less than 24 hours.
During that time, Google noticed and put a Big Fat Warning that comes up when anyone uses to Google to visit the site, or by anyone accessing the site with spyware turned on their PC.
We immediately asked them to reassess, and the automated reply said in 2-3 weeks.
2 days to go and counting Google…

No. I was totally up for the equivalent weasel coffee when I visited Vietnam last year, but no bugger had heard of it.

Jo S,
We were in northern Italy last month and found the espresso to be routinely pretty fine and even better, it was cheap. About 80-90 Euro cents per cup drunk at the bar.
have to agree, we were over in May and even the free espresso they served us on the intercity trains was great. South of France was good - great cafe in Uzes - but Paris not so good.

What's "quickly"? I finally have stuff to post today (an appalling incident of racism in Oz, Northern Territory Aborgines apparently winning control over fishing rights, and another US torture scandal), and it would be nice to be able to talk about it while its all current.

Ooh 'fish in a bowl' at DKD. Of course that was hot chocolate, but the triple shot long black was great too, especially when out late ...

ET etc had a great thing going there but got a we bit carried away with the whole Kurt Cobain thing in the end.

I've copied you in to an email to someone who might be able to help, on your Inspire address.

Simple Cottage?

I/S, I hope you get back online soon in the meantime, thanks for posting news of the Taree racism - so much for the PM's apology hey!
-
Apparently they also now require word verification for posting if you make a large number of posts in a single day. What's a "large number"? Apparently more than 5 - in other words, if you are a high-volume political blog.

Oh, and the Domobar is finally back home. I'm still slightly annoyed they managed to make 1.5 hours labour take three weeks (and it was in pieces on a bench for the whole third week), but I'm grateful and impressed that they haven't just serviced it but upgraded several pieces.
Just made a coffee. I could see it was coming out beautifully straight away by the blobbing and tiger-striping. I'm now back to wondering why 90% of cafes can't make a cup as good as some munter like me can make at home ...

Simple Cottage?
Mmmmm, nachos!

Probably not a good thing to generalise about the quality of American food. You need to seek out 'hypenated' food ie Tex-Mex, German-American. I found a wonderful Mexican restaurant in St. Louis, MO last year (named 'Alicias'). The waitress recognised me, on my third visit. The cactus strips were special (kind of like green peppers) and the taco baskets were extra special (you ate the whole lot). Down the road was a Cajun restaurant, which served alligator (tasted a bit like pork).
Have a great weekend.

Upthread a while back there was the mention of the taste of free-range pork. I particularly liked Nicholas Kristof's thoughts on the matter. Not preachy (he is after all a meat eater,) but lightweight and inspired.
