Arf, I liked that Rock'n'Rolla remix. Nice to hear the ubiquitous Sugarman messed around a little bit. Also liked the new Pretty Lights. Look forward to the new album.
On Hype Machine, here's Noche+Sueños off Mala's album Mala in Cuba remixed by garage/dubstep chappy Zed Bias
And Mrs Dudley Perkins, aka afro'd hiphop beats maker extraordinaire Georgia Anne Muldrew with Popstopper off her upcoming album;

I'm baffled by so many people that normally wouldn't touch heavy metal with a bargepole going ga-ga over Beastwars - John Campbell being a classic example. Is it simply because they're from NZ ?
Obviously they're very good at what they do, I "get" that. But there are a lot of people that otherwise have no interest in metal, have never shown any interest previously in, say, Sepultra or Mastadon or whoever, yet are getting all excited by Beastwars.
It's as if the same people who'd previously never shown any interest in reggae were to suddenly get excited by, say, Fat Freddy's.
It simply doesn't add up.

Sabbath were indeed awesome and they chose a great selection of their lesser known songs. Beforehand I'd said that I'd be ecstatic if they included Into the Void and Electric Funeral, and Linton can confirm that I was indeed jumping up and down with excitement when they did! And the audience was lovely - as happy as the band was to be there! Totally agree with your son's assessment :-)

Maybe it is a result of their name being given to a beer - I think it was a Hallertau brew - and it was nice beer, too.

could it be by virtue of them being nice blokes?
being locals sure doesn't hurt either, add in their real social networks and virtual (they're bloody great on the twitters) and you've got a connection to audience
I like em and rarely bother to check out metal... as in guilty of the above
the beer was too sweet imo, nice for a bottle but not a session

swad,
Hmm - Mayhem weren't really that nice though eh? One band member shot and ate the other after a church burning frenzy and then became a white supremicist...

I'm not really a session drinker (any more) so the couple I had were just fine - reasonable level of hoppiness & a nice smooth finish.
-
Pete,
This Sabbath line-up was more dirge-ey than the previously toured version fronted by Dio.
Different erasTry listening to "Supernaut" REALLY FUCKING LOUD if you ever wonder just what the fuss about the original Sabbath was all about - I swear you can dance to it though some drinking may be required..

There's always someone who spoils it for the others.

I gather they've had that response ever since they emerged: "I'm not really into metal, but I like you guys."

Norwegian metal bands have a reputation even amongst metal fans as being <technical term>utterly fucking insane<technical term>. That's 'insane' in the bad way, not the Ozzy Osbourne 'let me hear you all go crazy' kind of way.
A doco worth checking out is A headbanger's journey. It's Canadian, so couldn't really be any nicer (eh). But at one point, having done all these happy interviews, the maker/presenter interviews a few Norgie bandmembers. I'd be understating things if I said the upbeat tone nosedives sharply at that point.
While most metal fans seem to be able to take it both 'really seriously' and 'not at all seriously' at the same time, something got lost in translation in Norway. It's like they heard about the PMRC and backmasking and devil worship and all the rest of it, and thought they'd do their best to make Jerry Falwell's feverdreams an actual reality.

When Dio was fronting them, IT WASN'T SABBATH, INFIDEL! Prepare to feel the wrath of my furry jockstrap.

True, but the Heaven & Hell album is still pretty good.
Also worth checking out is the classic doco Heavy Metal Parking Lot. Filmed in 1986 in the parking lot before a Judas Priest concert. A true snapshot of the fans, fashion and haircuts of the time.

Not much into HM myself--it all sounds rather hackneyed and the Tshirts are so ugly--but I encountered a curious coincidence today. At my old university in Ohio (Bowling Green State Univ) to do some research and a presentation. A visitor two weeks before me was Dave Snell from Univ of Waikato, doing a talk on his study of NZ bogans for an augural Heavy Metal conference. Received press coverage in the Toledo Blade and Wall Street Journal.

I still remember Black Sabbath at The Great Ngaruawahia Music Festival in 1973. There was a burning cross up on the hill behind us and the audience lit up big time too. I don't remember the music so much but the atmosphere was great. Split Ends, Dragon and Blerta were the musical highlights for me - oh and Corben Simpson complete with a striptease!

Sabbath went through many phases and even the Ian Gillan album had some good bits - I just treat em like a bunch of different bands that happen to share a core. YMMV.
Having seen Dio play in AK with Iommi et al it was the only gig I've ever been to where it sounded exactly the same no matter where you were standing which is hard to do. Dio (RIP) may've looked like an unemployed court jester onstage but he had a great voice and "Sign of the Southern Cross" is still a legend track. The corporate reason why Bill wasn't on drums
http://www.thrashhits.com/2012/02/lets-read-between-the-lines-of-the-black-sabbathbill-ward-split-shall-we/
should remind you that Sabbath these days is a hard-nosed profit pulling stadium seller out to make moolah
TL:DR- they ran the numbers and offered Bill shit money, he refused.Saturday's gig was great and I love coming up to AK - esp the art gallery which was damn fine.
Even if Ozzy looked more like he was in need of a zimmer frame than a bat's head I thought the band and venue was really goodNow try listening to "Sleeping Village" off the first album and calm yo tits

Hell no - I'm listening to 'Snowblind'. Did they play it?
Nothing against Dio. I like him, I just don't like any of the music he's ever done, with or without Sabbath.

Russell - belated, but I'm very pleased and quite surprised Jimmy enjoyed himself. I would have assumed an event/atmosphere like that would have been a bit too overwhelming. Has he ever shown any interest in making music? Get him copies of Cubase and Protools, and let him rip out some filthy metal-inspired dubstep.

I know nothing about heavy metal, which I lost track of just after Paranoid was released but I do like have one Sabbath tune on the i-thingy
which is a fabulous bit of late-psychedelia.
And while I'm here I'm going to plug Murray Cammick's guest post on my blog because he does know about James Brown.

He's been coming to gigs with me for nearly a year -- and yes, I was surprised at how he had no problem with the noise and crowds. He really loves it and handles himself well.
