The Jaar remix of Cherokee has been haunting me since I found it last week.
The other one which caught my attention recently was Laura by Bat for Lashes.
There’s a few remixes out there too.
For the DCD die-hards (cough) like yours truly, my Vinyl copy of their new album Anastasis arrived in the post this week. Would be pretty happy if they turned up on our shores in their current world tour.
Don’t worry, I’ve heard it’s not contagious.

Found this this week, which is well worth a listen
3 years ago Solid Steel DJs Cheeba, Moneyshot and Food had the idea of collaborating on a version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album made entirely from the original sample sources, shortly after Moneyshot aired his mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ album in the same way.
Finally the result is here, titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ - each of them have taken a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.
The mix was over half way completed when they heard the tragic news of MCA‘s death in May so the impetus to finish it was instantly doubled and new meaning given to the project. It goes without saying that this is also a tribute to Adam Yauch and the legacy he left behind and we hope it will be embraced by Beastie fans around the globe.

I remember when The Checks played the Labour Party conference in 2005. I was pretty young at the time, but even then I thought they were young!

Do you know the Guillemots, JP? They are loved by a friend of mine who also loves Bat for Lashes. Neither are quite my thing. :-)

Russell, I've seen Cat Power or Chan live I think 3 times and it can be a pretty harrowing experience watching her try and deal with being on stage even!
However I do "remember" them playing a summer series, 1999 I believe, with the two guys from the dirty three as the rhythm section. They came on after a blistering HDU set where unfortunately I may or may not have been imbibing too much alcohol (and maybe something else) in the bar area......while detail is scarce I do recall being blown away....
So here's hoping the terminal shyness is on the wane eh? Because she's got some very beautiful music.

Wow, I downloaded Cat Power's Cherokee it's quite different to her early stuff! Might have to get the whole thing and have a proper listen. She's very talented.

Yes, I have that album. They were big on bFM in 200?, but sort of came and went. Almost like a passing train. There is newer stuff, but I haven't been keeping track. Seems the early resonance faded.

I didn't quite get 'Cherokee' when it hit the internets a while back, but a couple of listens to the whole album and it clicked. It's a cool record.

Ditto, once, but I'm definitely going to get this latest album after listening to these two tracks. She mightn't be a great live performer, but she's a brilliant musician regardless.
The French for Rabbits track is lovely also.
I reminds me a little of this song by the Dum Dum Girls (new to me but probably not to others).

Incidentally, although TripleJ still provides the platform for Australian music, Sydney's fbiradio is well worth a listen.

The Checks played Bayfield Music in the Field. Time stopped. Awesome band who should have been more revered. I loved Cherokee immediately. Also listening to new Byrne/St Vincent. Brass bands still need something extra to be really cool.

I don't know--the NZ Army Band can be pretty groovy. Maybe they could sell off all their tanks and buy more musical instruments.

That's almost like swords-to-ploughshares. Except a brass band can be a terrifying weapon if used at close range. :-)
