  • bob daktari,

wish some forward thinker would bung these chaps into a vineyard - not sure I can manage a trip across the ditch to see them, throw in swans for good measure and hey presto crowd of 23

I reckon somewhere more industrial, like a disused coal mine..

  • Kumara Republic,

I think Ozzy’s solo work is dreck and Sabbath is really a treat for my son, but I thought I’d check out the current touring show on YouTube. Conclusion: it’s GREAT.

Ozzy's early solo work is best, courtesy of Randy Rhoads on the 6-string. Wasn't quite the same after Rhoads died young.

  • James Butler,

It’s Neil Young and Crazy Horse – how do you think it sounds?

They've been playing that song for 35 years and it still sounds, once or twice, like it could all fall to pieces. Beautiful.

Myself and a few others are flying up from the South Island for the Neil Young concert in Auckland. It'll be awesome.

I'm rather looking forward to catching The Pretty Things at the Powerstation next month. It remains to be seen if they're still any good...

  • Barnard,

I really hope Cat Power does make it.

I know she's said that despite cancelling the European tour she still intends to come, but given everything that's been going on with her sadly I wouldn't be shocked if it doesn't happen.

Got my Neil Young ticket. And my Laneways ticket. Check. And with any luck, a Stone Roses ticket.

  • Mike O'Connell, in reply to Kumara Republic,

Yes, in that infamous light plane crash in 1982. I had quite forgotten Tony Iommi was left-handed. He lost finger-tips on his middle and ring finger but as result of an industrial accident but successfully compensated by using thimbles and lighter strings to play that signature style of Sabbath's.

And I also note he plays a Gibson SG as does our very own (left-handed) Shayne Carter. Well he did have one until some ratbag nicked it - not sure if he ever got it back. Does anyone know? I recall him on radio fairly recently about being in guitar heaven, visiting a (solely) left-handed guitar shop in Alberquerque or some such place.

A local Wellington band Brockaflower release their EP later today - free downloads (or pay something if you have it) of one track here:

Sounds great to my (slightly biased) ears. Have a listen.

yeah man, although I'm just as keen to hear Larry Morris peel the paint off the back wall. that man has a serious set of pipes.

also celebrating finally getting hold of a copy of T-Rex's Futuritsic Dragon - really looking forward to giving this a spin at Golden Dawn...

    both kinds of music.

Don't know anything about Pretty Lights but, like Richard, I have my ticket for The Pretty Things. Partly in the interest of historical symmetry, having been at their infamous New Plymouth concert some time last century.

But Elvis Costello in a vineyard? Just doesn't seem right.

Got my Sabbath tickets seconds after pre-sale opened. I'm not much of a concert goer, but this is a must (and probably last-chance-to) see.

The clip of Paranoid Russell's posted kicks ass. While no metal fan, there's the odd tune that resonates and this sure is one off 'em. Gosh I'm almost tempted to go ...it's the original band sans Bill Ward the drummer. And Ozzy looks and sounds pretty good as well!

    Not exactly Blue Note N.Y.
Mangaweka actually; The Rangitikei Ecofest. This Summer (yep it will happen) FG and friends will provide something fairly laid back, in comparison. Shameless self-advertising, but you might want to get away from it all:

Devo at Villa Maria, Laneway & now The Pretty Things courtesy of bfm this morning. Yay! Would love to be able to stretch to Cat Power & The Stone Roses too, but the mortgage takes priority, sadly.

Would really love to see Devo and Elvis too - but I can't get past the winery thing. It's just, well, not appropriate.

  • Samuel Scott,

So many gigs. It's amazing, but also financially draining. I have decided to forgo Black Sabbath and The Stone Roses (even though I have long standing love both bands). Radiohead kinda blew the budget. I have forked out too much money for Morrissey tickets and he just better be good (if he plays 'There Is A light' it will be entirely worth it).

The Laneways lineup is starting to look really interesting. Policia and Real Estate have upped my excitement considerably.

And as for Neil Young, he blew my mind at BDO. Gotta see him again. Pretty F#$@$ expensive.

He's been playing vineyards in the USA for years although I usually hate those crowds. The Imposters are a good band. I've seen them... four times?... and they still have some surprisingly badass moments (it's really all about Pete Thomas). Also I am WAY more scared of Van Morrison than Elvis. What a grumpy bugger. :)

I am pretty sure the Spinning Songbook is not coming here. Which is why I'm going to Sydney to see it. Because I am nuts.

Russell, it's too late now, but those vineyard show seats are a bit of a waste of money - you can get so close to the stage on the sides that GA is just as good. Plus more flexibility with wandering about.

I seem to have accumulated tickets to Morrissey AND Devo (I think one will have to be sacrificed), Weezer, Elvis here, Elvis in Sydney, Pretty Lights, Ringo (yikes, that will be a cheesefest), Neil Young, and Wilco. Will definitely go to the Stone Roses too. Have I missed anyone? :)
