  • Russell Brown,

It was a very good Media 7 last night but I did harbour a hope that there might be a lovely botulism bug lurking in the food that P. J. O'Rourke's CIS audience was scoffing.

Heh. Whilst acknowledging his influence on the use of humour in political commentary, I don't think O'Rourke has been good for decades. Every soundbite from that speech sounded to me like a shallow punchline.

  • Simon Grigg,

I'm finding the whole Twitter thing fascinating, as a new user. I'm not sure it's all good, but it's not all bad either.

Same..it plays to my information junkie impulses. If you fine tune it, it's an incredible flow of data and links. I just make a point of de-following anyone who sends me more than a couple of tweets along the lines of "I'm off to the shops now" or "mmm, that was a great meal"

I'm liking the backlash against it too...makes me think of my dad telling me that this Beatles thing is a nonsense when I was a lad. There was an anti-Twitter rant in the Australian last week which moved into a moan asking why the TV shows nowadays are not as good as Callan.

  • Craig Ranapia,

And what will you do once they've hardened up? I should think they'd need a jolly good rubbing down.

Learned lessons well have you, my young padiwan-learners. Now, after a hard day of pseudo-writing must away to an early screening of Star Trek. Keep up the bad work.

I think that's the key to it.

Funnily enough, that's more what I'm there for: keeping in contact with what friends are up to. In those two cases, I might reply "Hey, want to catch up while you're in town?" or "Where was that? I'm always keen to hear about new restaurants."

But then again, I've come to Twitter from Facebook, rather than seeing it as an information source.

    @ MARK: That was glorious.

I hadn't seen the Nat Film Unit flick but I remember the series - esp. that Bastille Day test. It was an epic.

I agree. But who was that demented-looking stand-up comic on the Crunchie Comedy show on Wednesday night TV--the fellow who spun the wild and disturbing story about placing a kitten in a hollowed-out loaf of bread because it would "surely scare the mouse"!

  • Grant Dexter,

When is someone going to shoot the criminal so Napier and New Zealand can get back to life?

    Sorry. Thread-jacking.

  • Steve Barnes,

Sorry Grant how remiss of us. I didn't realise that justice and the rule of law was causing you so much inconvenience. I'll get right on to it.

  • Grant Dexter,

Cheers, mate. Not you though. That wouldn't be proper. Unless you're a member of the armed offenders squad?

Surely if it was that easy they would have done it by now? Or you could always book a flight back in your capacity as emergency commonsense advisor...

  • Grant Dexter,

Common sense is free and easily transmitted. No need for international flights.

I hear they might have tried gas. That's a start. But, let's be reasonable, it's one Rambo-wannabe in a house verses 100 people trained to deal with hostiles. If you can shoot 3 pirates on the high sea through a window then surely this cannot be too hard.

Have they retrieved the body from the driveway yet? Or are they just going to leave the guy there till Sunday?

  • LegBreak,

My common sense advice would be that they should slip him a massive joint so he goes to sleep.

They are just called "The Armed Offenders Squad" they're not really "Offenders"

I reckon an atom bomb a few hundred metres from his house would take him out nicely. Cause a bit of collateral damage but they're all dope-smoking gang trash in those bush towns anyway..

Geoff, 'twas Mark Watson, I believe.

That's a particular horror which had slipped my mind. I suppose the overriding concern has to be nobody else getting killed, though.

It's one of the unsettling elements of rational policing -- a slain cop lies there for as long as it takes. The implication has been that they tried to remove the body under cover of darkness, but the shooter has night-sight.

  • Paul Campbell,

Yeah - just leave the guy - normally I;d guss they'd just wait for him to drift off to sleep but supposedly he has explosives/booby traps/etc, I guess they don't want the value of the surrounding real estate to go down ....instead they'd rather he got tired of being in there and choose to come out on his own I bet he has no power and no water and at this point his toilet is starting to get a bit unpleasant .....
