  • Paul Campbell,

BTW at the end of this there just has to be an investigation as to how someone without a firearms license end up with so much weaponry

  • Grant Dexter,

They weren't even sure he was dead!

"The fact we have got an officer we cannot get out from the situation, we cannot confirm finally that the man is dead is deeply distressing.

"He is in a position where we can say with reasonable certainty that he must be dead, but no one has been able to get there close to him and check that."

Police Commissioner Howard Broad - NZHerald

Regardless of his condition you do not leave fallen comrades. You do all you can for them and hope for the best!

A single man holds a square kilometre of a city to ransom. Police leave a comrade lying in the middle of the driveway for, how long? Has he been retrieved? And for what?

They were going to shoot shit out of the house using the 25mm cannon on the LAV, but at $100 a round English has vetoed it.

Yeah, and we need to licence crowbars as well and then launch investigations everytime someone without a license uses one to break into a house. :|

The only investigation that needs to be done is into the hearts of men who would decide to leave a shot man lying in the driveway for a day.

Shoot the criminal in the house, retrieve your fallen and let's get on with life, already!

Army surplus, I suspect, given the "self-styled Rambo"'s background in the Territorials.

    From the Granny:

Molenaar's brother told TVNZ's Close Up last night that Jan Molenaar might be using guns he used in pig hunting and during his time as a soldier.

Peter Molenaar said his brother used to keep his guns in a sealed case in the family home when they were growing up.

Can people possibly lay off the Kiwibog-esque "kill the bastard now" talk? If the police think they can resolve the situation without further loss of life, let them do it. The guy could be seriously mentally ill, for all we know.

Even allowing for a certain theatricality, that's an absurd statement.

What you're saying is that you'd rather allege cowardice on behalf of the man's fellow officers than have a look at how Molenaar came to be sitting around with an arsenal, waiting to flip his lid.

It's evident from police statements that courageous attempts have been made to remove the body.

They're police, not soldiers. Which is a good thing.

Apart from what others have said, I can think of a couple other things:
    - there may be someone else in the house.
    - it may be that they can't get a clear shot AND keep the place surrounded. Houses aren't exactly bullet-proof. So if you want to protect the public, wait him out.

  • Isabel Hitchings,

Distressing as it may be a dead guy isn't going to get much deader by lying on a driveway for a while so if retrieving him involves risking any other life then it's the better choice. And it's better if they can get the offender out alive - not just for his sake but for the mental health of the police officers too. I'd imagine that killing someone in the line of work, no matter how dire the situation, would take an enormous emotional toll that I wouldn't wish upon anyone.

The only investigation? We don't need to know the reasons why a person went off the rails and ended up holed up in a house with guns and explosives surrounded by police, then?

  • Grant Dexter,

They were. not. certain. about his condition. Regardless of his condition it is unbelievable that they would leave him lying in the driveway all this time. I do not question the courage of the men on the scene. I question the rules and procedures in place that put the life of the criminal above the retrieval of a fallen officer. I question the sanity of a heightening of bureaucracy in response to what should be encouraging better weapons and tactics training.

The guy should have been incapacitated and the officer attended to quickly.

    Now it's too late.

And you guys want to praise the system that lets this happen. :|

Dude, deal with the situation. It's one guy in a house with no hostages and a cop lying in the driveway.

If this situation can lead to days of standoff what's going to happen when someone plans something?

How many people are we going to leave lying in the street out of a reluctance to harm the criminal spreading the terror?

That would be nice to know, but it's not going to do much to stop it happening again. Improving response time and effectiveness will save lives. And it will save the lives of those who are not terrorists.

Somebody has to be the voice of reason on this site, don't they? :)

Who's with me? Who would rather have seen Senior Constable Snee given every chance at immediate medical care with the criminal incapacitated rather than the current situation?

  • Paul Campbell,

So far the 'Voice of Reason' is not you Grant -this whole 'fallen comrades' stuff is more out of the war comics we used to see when I was a kid, anyone who risks their own life to retrieve a dead body is IMHO being stupid - it's the same reason they left those Aussies tourists under the glacier for a week or so recently.

And of course we need to be investigating how someone gets around the law and obtains firearms with out a license - that's one good way we'll protect the police from this sort of thing in the future - if he stole them from the territorials and no one noticed there's obviously something going wrong there that needs to be fixed

Oh, so if someone has written about heroic actions then those actions are automatically useless? Did you have a reason for sharing this inanity or are you just bored?

They DID NOT KNOW if he was dead:

Police Commissioner Howard Broad told media today that police had been attempting to recover Mr Snee from the scene without success.
"I understand a number of my officers have attempted to do so under direct fire from the house," he said.
"The fact we have got an officer we cannot get out from the situation, we cannot confirm finally that the man is dead is deeply distressing.
"He is in a position where we can say with reasonable certainty that he must be dead, but no one has been able to get there close to him and check that."

    NZHerald

Regardless of his condition every attempt should be made to retrieve your fallen. I can think of no good reason why it should not have been done and done immediately.

And of course we need to be investigating how someone gets around the law and obtains firearms with out a license

I can tell you how. They steal, lie and coerce.

that's one good way we'll protect the police from this sort of thing in the future

No it's not. Every regulation you place upon weapons will only make you more surprised when someone gets shot.

if he stole them from the territorials and no one noticed there's obviously something going wrong there that needs to be fixed

Undoubtedly. In the meantime we had a police officer lying in a driveway for 30-odd hours. He's been retrieved now. Who is with in in preferring that the man had been given every chance at medical help rather than what actually happened?

  • Tony Parker,

Grant-you know nothing of the outlay of the street and area where this is going on. The tv cameras can not see it from their vantage points. It's a house on a hill side with pretty good views of the street and surroundings. Any movement towards the dead policeman would have left the the police completely exposed although thankfully the body has been retrieved. Must have been the volley of shots I heard about an hour ago which is not a very comfortable noise to hear. I'm not in the lockdown zone but close enough to hear and there have been reports of bullets hitting a house outside the zone near Napier Intermediate. This has affected a lot of people here and funnily the people most affected are quite understanding about the need to take things carefully. Rumours are flying around Napier though and depending on who you talk to around town he's an ok guy or a dangerous man. The truth's probably somewhere in the middle.
