  • Craig Ranapia,

And listening to McCain making a rather gracious concession speech, while the trolls hiss and boo in the background, all I can think is that "Fuck, John, you sold yourself cheap."

Sincerely, I hope he's going to go back to Capitol Hill and start earning his redemption -- start taking his party back from the devils he was so quick to deal with.

  • Russell Brown,

McCain is giving a really fine speech of concession.

    I am amazed actually

If that McCain had run, he would have done a lot better.

    Wow.

Interesting that AP (via 538) have called Florida for Obama some time ago, but CNN still haven't?

Thank God the John McCain that conceded just now wasn't the one Obama had to campaign against.

  • Craig Ranapia,

So hoping for an Obama win in Arizona would be mean spirited?

Sort of, but it's not in his hands or ours. What is, is.

Churchill? Seriously? Fuck Churchill. Here's MLK, the day before his assassination:

Dude, no disrespect to Doctor King, but you don't bring out an oldie (however much of a goodie) to welcome a new age. And, yes, I really do think Democrats getting their gloat on, however understadably, aren't setting the right tone. Celebrate a great achievement; but tomorrow the hard work begins anew, as it does every day.

No, I don't think that running on a platform of electing Barack Obama would have netted him many states. And I say it in all seriousness.

This we agree on, Tom? I think that McCain would have still lost, but at least he could have done so with honour. And I know that sounds really pompous, but what breaks my heart is watching the Republicans -- and McCain -- throw their honour away. I just can't believe any decent human being -- and principled conservative -- could look back on that campaign and not feel degraded.

  • Sam F,

Now, this may not be very mature of me. But the Republicans have spent a good eight years steamrollering their crap through despite a generally supine Democratic party, with an upraised finger aimed at the opinion rest of the world.

Thus I don't think one evenings' gloating is bad form in this context. In fact, I'd say it's downright appropriate.

(Let's just hope the no-longer-supine Democrats display permanent backbone in the face of what is to come.)

Meanwhile, on this historic day with history in the making, we'll cut away halfway through McCain's speech for 5 minutes of random drivvel from the studio, followed by Wheel Of Fortune.

Great going TVNZ! Truelly the home of news.

Craig, while I take your point, what I now want (to paraphrase you), is for the GOP to fuck off into the naughty corner for a couple of decades until they realise what they did wrong and are prepared to apologise. If that means rubbing their noses in it, so be it.

Knock yourself out. A moment to acknnowledge those who gave their life to this particular cause, inspiring millions of blacks and whites alike in the process, as opposed to old white tories who had nothing whatsoever to do with it and who spoke in insufferable aphorisms, wouldn't be wasted either.

  • Graeme Edgeler,

    I see Franken-Coleman is still 42-42.

And despite being 55-41 up in Georgia, CNN still hasn't called that Senate race for the Republican. The Dems aren't not getting that filibuster-proof majority (they're at 40 at the moment).

    McCain concedes graciously.

Obama will want to strike the same tone. Me, I just want to see it. As opposed to "Wheel of Fortune".

Incredible day, one of a few in my lifetime. Please, NZ networks, in your 6 pm bulletins don't dedicate less time to this than the wrap-up of non-events in sport.

Cancel the Sainsbury show if you have to!
