  • Tristan,

After the last election C&R from day one have attacked the council which I thought was quite amusing because they hadn't done anything yet.

They have persisted with thier attack over the years and have decided its a better course to follow rather than any policy.

A good friend of mine summed it up as, "yes throwing shit is fun but at the end of it your both coverd in shit"

  • Craig Ranapia,

Eww... I guess the kitty p0rn had to come sooner or later. :) And I guess we know who does the vege shopping in the Brown-Rae household - you'd probably never eat the greens again after going shopping with me.

  • Kyle Matthews,

re: the John Key video. I was struck by how he wandered around and no one came up and talked to him, at least in the bits of the video that were edited in. One sequence was probably 20 seconds of him just moping around. He strikes me as a person who doesn't know how to approach 'real' people, and who real people either didn't know, or weren't interested in.

I can't imagine Helen Clark getting five feet without someone saying hello, smiling, or coming up to talk to her about something.

I'm sure there's a media minder who just earned their Christmas bonus with that one. God, those 'spontaneous' walkabouts are so contrived I just end up feeling embarrassed for everyone concerned.

  • hudsie,

Perhaps in the Key video, it was simply that the folks at the market didn't recognise him.He seems so homogenised, so bland. It is almost painful and sad to see him drifting around like that. Not even his minders appear interested in him.

Could he be after the sympathy vote with this cunning viral campaign.

  • B Jones,

Good thing I didn't shell out for the extra year's warranty on the freeview box I bought an hour ago - the young man at DSE was doing quite the sell on it. It will go nicely with the telly, a 29 inch CRT purchased just before plasmas and lcds went mass market.

Heh - although to be fair I have seen HC at our local Mt Albert school fair over the last 2 years doing the meet'n'greet with us ordinary folk, without media or handlers, and she manages just fine to yak about the weather and other sundry small talk staples. Only in NZ etc.

And also to be fair to John Key, I've seen him in similar environments and he aint so bad at the schmoozing either - maybe that video is capturing some of the residual 'master-of-the-universe' traits of the New York money trader lurking inside him, but he is usually a lot more comfortable with 'the people' than his predecessor.

  • Damian Christie,

Techy question, which I guess I should direct within my own organisation but it's just easier to pick brains here:

Is there going to be a Freeview box with a built in PVR recorder thingy?

Because I've realised that as much as I love MySky, more than 95% of the programmes I record are ones that are on the freely available channels. So I could dump my MySky and just use my video recorder sure, but it's the ease of the whole built-in-schedule recording-by-programme with series link etc that makes MySky so damn good.

Otherwise, any good workarounds someone can suggest?

  • Ben Gracewood,

Bah... guess who bought a Freeview box on Friday for the Rubgy.

Still, can't complain, it does 480p so it's already nice and sharp compared to my old stock Sky box.

I just wonder why TVNZ/Freeview won't pony up for the bandwidth to run HD over satellite? Is it really that much cheaper to do it over UHF?

    Damien: Bingo

(Actually it doesn't say anywhere that it does Freeview, but I'm assuming it's a Freeview Satellite decoder + PVR)

Last time I saw the PM she had just jumped back into her (self driven) car after emptying her PO box, I waved and she she waved back.

It was uncontrived and left everyone with me with a warm fuzzy feeling that we lived in a special country indeed where you can spot the unescorted PM whilst picking up your Indian takeways.

Anyone who is big enough to see it can tell in an instant Helen Clark is a gifted leader and the outstanding politician of her times. On the other hand, I suspect John Key is more a patrician thana politician.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

It's not so much that he's sniffing the veges, but it's that he does it so quickly before passing them to the stall owner. It's like someone's told him to sniff the veges rather than it being something he normally does.

Also, I feel perculiar staring at Colin's nether regions. Um...

  • Conor Roberts,

The absolute worst bit of the John Key video is when he is listening to the lady talking about her concerns with affordable housing.

He just doesn’t seem to give a shit about what she is talking about and walks off.

    That was telling and disgusting.

I dunno, I agree it doesn't look good, but to me it looks more like he was starting to get a bit worried by this person who'd been following him around with a camera for the last god-knows-how-long (and who wasn't part of the official John Key Camera Crew(TM))

Still, knowing someone ELSE was filming him, he should've been even more careful to give the woman at least the appearance of a listening ear.

  • Craig Ranapia,

    Tom:

Um... OK. Thanks for sharing, as I don't live anywhere near either Clark or Key I doubt any Hallmark moments of that magnitude are on the horizon unless I start doing the creepy stalker thing. Anyway, I'm sure 'patrician' Key sends a serf to clear the mailbox.:)

But seriously, Tom, if you think those mall walkabouts aren't stage-managed until they squeak, you're rather naive. And please note that I'm not being partisan about it - everybody does them, and they're all ridiculous.

Nah, you know what's really telling and disgusting - that it's probably going to be a matter of when not if we see "guerilla video" of Helen Clark scratching her arse leading the six o'clock news. (Not that that would be a good thing, Mr. Christie. :) )

To be fair, Clark had a lot of meet and greet practice in the late 90s. She had an image, formed through TV, of being cold and unapproachable, but was and is a good people-person face-to-face. So the strategists sent her out and around the country to meet as many people as she could. It worked very well.

Didn't Key get his mail one morning dressed only in his dressing gown and moon some of his neighbours?

I think you'll find that gift is called "practise and hard work". Key'll get better at it if he has a mind to.

  • Jackie Clark,

In 1974, when we lived in Greymouth, there arrived a special surprise in the living room of the family house. It was a colour television -- a 26" Thorn the size of a small chest of drawers -- and it had been purchased so as to capture the glory of the Commonwealth Games.

Same, same, same. Those Thorns were also fabulous for the all night Telethon efforts. Ah, those were the days. Meanwhile, my lovely husband bought me a freeview box for my birthday. What a nice man. Except that he couldn't figure out how to install it - this was 4 months ago, when there really wasn't any technical advice available, and this is a man after all who is a techie person, so I gave up and took the thing back to DSE. Bah humbug.
