I'm going to sound hopelessly out dated but...

... Gene Krupa is my favourite drummer, particularly 'Sing, sing, sing' with Benny Goodman.

  • Rob Hosking,

My manners... yeah, happy B'Day, Russell.

On the drumming theme... I'd also nominate the whoever drummed on Smokey Robinson's 'Tears of a Clown': it really drives the entire track.

And on Moon: here's a Who track which should have been better known... and which also shows where Jim Henson and is co-Muppetteers got the model for their drummer.

    Oh I totally agree.

Well, to bring it full circle, Gene Krupa was Moonie's favourite drummer and you can certainly get a sense of free flowing jazz rhythms in Moon's style.

  • Paul Williams,

Oh yeah Krupa's amazing, Joe Morello too. There's a youtube (can't access this at work) of Brubeck's Take Five with the famous Morello solo... or you can follow it from a link here (and if you do, you should also check this out, the link to the Purdy shuffle

  • Danielle,

    Gene Krupa is a *badass*.

(I also vote for Al Jackson, Jr, member of the MGs and Stax house drummer; Pete Thomas, cadaverous-looking Attraction; and good old Jim Keltner, just for having drummed on, like, everything in the whole world. Even Gary Wright's 'Dreamweaver', for goodness' sake!)

Taking in a more recent, less rock, perspective I'd add Coldplay's drummer, Will Champion, to the mix for the sheer ferocity of his playing. I'm over the band, having seen them once too often, but man he plays hard.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

My awesome drumming moment was in 1995 (or thereabouts) when Daniel Mancini's band Mancini played at Waikato Uni's Wailing Bongo bar and drafted Biff Bangle on a second drumkit. That's right, two drummers. I remember sitting there, entranced by the raw tribal energy coming from the stage. There were other instruments in the band, but they didn't matter. That night the drums, they were telling a story.

  • rodgerd,

Personally I'm a big fan of Nicko McBrain because not only is he a fantastic drummer (I offer you such show-off tracks as Run to the Hills(1) or 2 Minutes to Midnight), he's got a sense of humour.

If I were a drummer, I'd be tempted by his drum clinics, and terrified that he'd try teaching some his wierd and wonderful time signatures (e.g. 7/4).

[1] Yes, I know that track pre-dates him in the band.

The Moon biography Dear Boy has a fairly creepy bit where he's desperately seeking treatment for his extreme alcohol and drugs addictions. He saw rock star psychologist Meg Patterson who, on hearing him talk about his problems was moved (uncharacteristically) to advise him that he needed Jesus Christ. He agreed but explained that he was possessed by demons who took the form of an elderly Pakistani couple called Mr & Mrs Singh. They were apparently taking over his mind.

She was of the opinion that it wasn't more Moon hijinks because he was at such a low ebb and referred him onto her husband George, who was an expert in the occult.

Looking at that You Tube video you can certainly see a man in the throes of a fairly decent wig out.

Excuse the rude interruption, but just for reasons of accuracy is it Whimps or Wimps? I need to know.

(Also, Dr. Horrible rulz. Seriously. Google it. Tell your friends. He's better than blueberry muesli. That's right).

And yes, he was good - to us back in Wanganui circa 1986...

Closer to home, we had a bloke who drummed with us in a high school band - kept on doing these "jazz" fills, which I think pissed off lead guitar (and leader) no end. Mike did a record with HLAH, and then got roped into Pluto, and to be fair, I've never seen a more commited man to his music....
