  • Russell Brown,

    Anyone else seen this?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_oil

I can't possibly approve of such a use of Wikipedia, but that's priceless.

  • merc,

Really, really strange, I'm...speechless. No, I'm not, that Weli-girl Band Camp story, priceless.

  • Che Tibby,

rofl at the wikipedia comment. only proves sonic's original point.

and well... wish i could view what's going on at whaleoil, but my home URL appears to have been denied permission shortly after i made my comments. presumably for calling whale an 'idiot'. goes to show, best response to a bully is laughter.

can anyone tell me if the comment where i say, "you asked for my opinion.." made it past the "moderators"?

  • Sonic,

You are right Russell, I was a bit over the top, got annoyed at people threatening Phil.

    (original thread here)

Still no excuses, I should have just dropped it.

  • Che Tibby,

i'm loving this "in a real pub you'd get knocked on your ass" line from whaleoil...

funny as all hell. i'm not interested in starting this chain up here, but.... "heavy blogger" + "working man's pub"?

    doesn't really gel, does it?

  • merc,

What you are witnessing first hand is delusional behaviour, Whale's repression has taken over and the result is effectively a neurotic collapse. The interesting thing is how this becomes a magnet for others in a similar state, they collectivise. It really is quite a dangerous situation because from a mental collapse point of view, the person may well do anything.
This is an aspect of the blogsphere that is very intriguing if you consider the theory of the Collective Unconscious.

Aw yeah, but you didn't run off and make a whole new blog thread for you and your creepy mates to bellow lame-ass threats of physical violence.

It is sort of amusing seeing Mr Oil, a well-fed Auckland Grammar boy if the truth be known, coming on like some sort of horny-handed enforcer in a "working man's pub" though, isn't it?

  • Sonic,

I should have just laughed it off though, rather than provoking it.

Anyway all done now, and a legendary internet thread is born.

We'll be telling our grandkids about it, when they as what was the origin of the term "Whale-Oil"

    [shocked look!!]

snigger.... so he's actually wearing chambrey and boat shoes.

if sonic actually gets jumped in a dark alley in the next few weeks, at least whale will be well-dressed when he's charged as the primary suspect.

  • Danyl Mclauchlan,

What's weird is that the wiki edit has stayed up for so long. The wikipedia admins are usually all over that kind of thing in seconds.

I don't think James is a troll and I think it's unfair that every time he posts - usually with a lucid viewpoint and links to support his claims - people pile on and dismiss him as a troll or right-wing nut.

  • Sonic,

I don't think a wiki admin would know it was untrue.

Or is it, after all it is on Wikipedia!

I agree, but the problem tends to be with the links posted are often rather suspect, rather nutty, right wing spiels. The one yesterday, the op ed from Murdoch's broadsheet in Australia (the same paper which employs the odious Greg Sheridan as its Foreign Editor) was a litany of faux logic ("the American haters even hated Carter"), and half baked dogma including the standard "America saved you from the Nazi's" nonsense that always gets trotted out as if it really has a relevance.

  • merc,

What he said. I think if we tolerate unmitigated cant recycled by mindless partisans and back out when we get accused of calling troll, we deserve what we get.
It's not a left right thing, it's an I can think for myself thing and respond if I want, it's MY bosses bandwidth you hoggin'.

Yeah, but you can shred someone's sources and demolish their argument without calling them a name. It's better that way. The more abusive Kiwiblog threads start to become interchangeable after a while: same shit, different topic ...

  • merc,

I didn't actually call James a troll, obliquely, maybe, and I apologised. I don't think you need to fear PA becoming Kiwiblog, it may however lower it's tone when you start calling people Well Fed Grammar Boys.
I went to Grammar and I was not well fed and I never wore or wear boat shoes or chambrey, honest.

If one looks at the photos of Mr Slater - nee Whaleoil - on his blog (which I won't link to because his children are in them) we can see that he is, indeed, conspicuously well fed. I don't think Sonic has much to fear as I doubt Slater can waddle fast enough to cause him any serious damage.

  • Alex Coleman,

    This is interesting, via digby.

Slide 15 of the evidence is a picture of some Iranian anti-tank rockets marked LOT: 5-31-2006

I'm not going to say based on that that they are fakes, but that date is in a strangely American format. So either it's a really stupid fake, or the Iranians are making rockets specifically to look like bad fake Iranian rockets. Which would be weird.

  • Russell Brown,

I decided that I'd be derelict as a Wikipedia editor if I didn't tidy up the article. But for posterity, the line removed from the bottom of the article was:

Also-Well known New Zealand gay code word for male sperm, as in "I bet he supps the Whale Oil on the quiet"

    Heh.

  • Sonic,

Sorry to dissent Russell, but "whale oil" is due to become a global double entendre.

Why do you hate our exporters so much?

Lets not let the phrase die, it works so well on so many levels!

  • reece palmer,

without wanting to offend our mate merc, quite a lot of grammar boys I have come across exhibit violent tendencies as their first option when engaging in any sort of debate that doesn't go their way. another euphemism that I had no idea existed, funny though. First time I've read the lunatic fringe (murray et al) it has a certain comedic value, but I'm curious as to the 'real pub' assertion. Does it have to have a pool table to be a 'real pub' or does it have to sell quarts to be considered a 'real pub' or does whale oil have to drink there to be considered a 'real pub'? If the latter is true then I would like to nominate 'surrender dorothy' as a real pub.

  • merc,

I'm not easily offended, if i was a generalisation would hurt me. Grammar is and was a strange place, I am invited to a 30th reunion next month, I won't be going, but that's personal, remember, in the main, we didn't all choose to go to Grammar. I'm a published poet, how does that fit into the Grammar mould (sic)?
Really, don't torture yourself trying to get whaleoil (God is that a verb now?). A wiser person than me said,
That that you don't get in others, is probably in you. Or, the Jesus guy, Judge not least ye be judged, and as Mr Stipe sang,
    What a beautiful refrain.

  • James Bremner,

Nice to know that I have been declared a "non-troll" by some. And I do have warm, red blood in my veins; I don't have cold, green, conservative slime. Honestly.

As far as posting nutty links goes, I think the Australian or the Times, leaning to the right as they do and Murdoch owned or not, are pretty much mainstream stuff. I don't think anyone does themselves any favors by cutting themselves off from these or other such sources, anymore than they do themselves a favor by cutting themselves off from left leaning publications such as the Observer, Guardian or NYT.

As far as referencing WWII or the Nazis is concerned, WWII was the greatest conflagration in human history. Trying to understand how and why the whole thing happened, and how and who stopped it, is fundamental to avoiding making similar mistakes, it will always be relevant. WWII & Adolf et al can most certainly be cited too often, but there are definitely some parallels to current situations, which are valid to cite, whether people like it or not.

Merc, when you say citing Churchill is not popular down here, I assume you are referring to Gallipoli. I am a Kiwi and so am very well aware of Churchill's role in that. It doesn't lesson his role in history or his wisdom. Warts and mistakes and all, he is rightly considered by many (if not most) to be the greatest leader of last century.

  • James Bremner,

Back to Iran's involvement in Iraq.

Does anyone seriously believe that the Iranians are not in Iraq up to their eyeballs? Some of it legitimate government to government and other type activity, but plenty of it being support for the Shia militias to advance their goal of getting the US and MNF forces out of Iraq and installing a radical Shia govt like Iran’s', in Iraq.

Think of the type of regime that Iran is and some of its activities since 1979. Think of the regime's strategic goals, the expanding radical Shia influence in the Middle East and kicking the US out of the region. Why wouldn't they be in Iraq (in several different modes of operation) when it offers them the chance to advance their major strategic goals? The idea that Iran is not meddling in Iraq seems most unlikely.

I am not suggesting that this is a reason to go bomb Teheran. But taking out any identified Al Quds command control, training or support locations close to the Iraqi border is something that is long overdue. Same for Syria. By not acting decisively the US is creating doubt about it determination and emboldening its enemies. Not a mistake that Churchill would have made.
