Ta Jackie. Seems a popular place with some of the other Kiwi musos too.

  • Jackie Clark, in reply to Islander,

I think so Islander. He hasn’t lived here for any long period of time, in the last 20 years, and I sense disconnection for him. He lives, of course, in a city which is very other. So different to here – different language, different way of doing things. He eventually wants to live in Bangkok – not home but near enough for us to visit him. But yes, the cultural dissonance he feels here is obvious.
And Sacha, that’s was what he was saying. That Berlin is so cheap and that the arts are so valued there, that many artists live there. I see no problem with that, but I did think his characterisation of Auckland as a arts “ghost town” was a bit spurious.

  • Islander, in reply to Jackie Clark,

I guess it depends on where artists - including writers - draw their strength fom eh? Many of us see this place as just getting up into gear (govt. funding would be a good idea however, because we are - small...)(Private patronage appears to be dependent on your known/apprehended political stance. Rightwing, majorly.))
Hamish's conclusions are cheap, and his assessments no longer relevant-

  • Simon Grigg,

I have to say that my distance has made me thrill more at what I see and hear from New Zealand, rather than less.

The place buzzes and I take some pride in what comes from our shores.

And - more - you understand the uniqueness of what we have so much more when you are able to stand back and give it the context in which it was created and the nation's musical lineage, which is so strong.

Put me in room with a random selection of music from around the world and I think I'd be able to pick the NZ tracks without much effort.

    It's a wonderful thing.

  • Geoff Lealand,

On things musical and local: excellent performance by Don McGlashan at the Academy of Performing Arts at the uni on Saturday night. Good to run into Malcolm Ibell again, who was doing sound.

I want to get one of those loop pedal devices Don was using--so I can use it to play instructions to some of my students who don't listen, over and over again.

I'll be up your way in July, Geoff... I could record your favourite 'instructions' so you can replay them as needed without straining the vocal chords :)
